Bay Bosses songs
$15.15 Bay Area rapper Mac Dre seemed remarkably prolific while alive, but the number of releases flooding the market since his death in 2004 reveals the artist was even more productive than his steady stream of albums indicated. 2006's UNCUT is one in a flurry of posthumous ...

Bay Bosses music CDs
$15.05 This duo is keeping alive a valuable tradition that's liable to fade away: the country "brother" harmony duo. In traditional country music's past, there were the Delmore Brothers, the Louvin Brothers, and others. They sang in a close, tight harmony similar to that found in bluegrass. This sound influenced the Everly Brothers, who in turn influenced the Beatles, the Hollies and too many others to mention. Connell ...
| | Tanya Tucker T.N.T. CD (1978)
Bay Bosses songs
$4.49 Given its uncharacteristically sexy cover, a rarity in country music at the time, TNT shocked many Tanya Tucker fans upon its release in 1978. The album not only looked notably different from the young Texas-born singer's previous releases, it sounded different, too, with slick of-the-moment, rock/disco-tinged production replacing Tucker's more straightforward country approach. While the opening "Lover Goodbye" (penned, oddly enough, by Phil Everly) is an upbeat club-ready number, the next track, the passionate "I'm the Singer, You're the Song," relies heavily on a string-laden backdrop and Tucker's yearning vocals. Though some tunes make concessions to the performer's honky-tonk side, most notably a soulful cover of John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery" and a lively version of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," other songs such as "If You Feel It" aim for an accessible rock-influenced sound. Tucker would eventually return to a rootsier aesthetic, but this fascinating, if somewhat uneven, record made a significant mark on both her career and the face of country music, presaging by decades the crossover appeal of Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and their peers.
Recorded at Kendun Recorders, Burbank, California.
Personnel: Tanya Tucker (vocals); Brent Nelson, Luther Waters, Dash Crofts, Lorna Willard, Curt Becher, Jerry ...

| | Dick Weissman Pioneer Nights CD (2000)
Bay Bosses CD music
$13.85 What does one arrive at by crossing old-time music with Django Reinhardt and jazz-grass? Well, basically a beautifully strange album like Pioneer Nights. Banjoist/12-string guitarist Dick Weissman and violinist/guitarist Gary Keiski team up in various combinations to play 18 originals that, genre-wise, defy category. "Mr. Banjeaurine Man" is a lovely banjo piece that lazily twists and turns toward no particular destination, while "Wolfgang's Banjo" glides along like a lullaby. The opening "Django's Dilemma," featuring banjo and fiddle, is one of the most intriguing, addicting pieces on the album. This is the type of instrumental that Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli would have played had they been born in Appalachia instead of Paris. Although known as a banjo player, Weissman's guitar work is equally impressive. There is a lovely, bossa nova-flavored piece titled "Breeze-il," and a dusty, Far East meets Wild West piece called "Superstition Mountain." His guitar work has an open quality that may remind some of John Fahey or the later work of Leo Kottke, but Weissman's compositions and phrasings are more distinct, more attention-grabbing. Critics often fall back on the old cliché of "this artist isn't as well-known as he should be," mostly due the frustration felt when a wonderful artist isn't given proper recognition. At least one can be thankful that labels like Wind River put artists like Weissman and Keiski in the studio and let their eccentric geniuses run wild. The liner notes by Weissman provide lots of nice tidbits on individual pieces, and on his inspiration for the album. Pioneer Nights is a beautiful album and should be warmly welcomed by everyone who loves original acoustic instrumentals. Don't miss it. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

$15.89 Germany-based record company, Nagel-Heyer, has pulled together some of the best from their stable of performers for a compilation built around the blues, Summer blues to be specific.
