Some band names seem destined to be used over and over, and Vicious Circle is one of those names. As of 2006, at least five bands have been called Vicious Circle -- possibly more -- but the Vicious Circle heard on The Art of Agony may be the oldest. This Vicious Circle, a death metal outfit from southern New Jersey, goes back to 1989 -- and on The Art of Agony (originally released on Neoblast in 2004 and reissued by Crash Music in 2006), the headbangers show no signs of mellowing with age. This is a brutal, head-crushing effort -- not as heavy as some death metal bands, but brutal nonetheless. And that brutality comes from a variety of influences, including early American death metal (especially the Florida bands that Scott Burns worked with), thrash, grindcore, and the technical side of Scandinavian death metal. The guitar playing on this 44-minute CD is very technique-minded, whether Vicious Circle are playing at breakneck speed, embracing a medium tempo, or providing a breakdown. Tempo changes are constant; they are so frequent that they give The Art of Agony an extremely chaotic, spastic, nervous quality, which is exactly what Vicious Circle are going for. Some extreme metal releases are draining because of their pure, unmitigated heaviness, but the thing that does the most to make The Art of Agony an exhausting listen isn't the heaviness or the density -- it is the nervous-as-hell atmosphere that all those tempo changes create. Despite being somewhat uneven and inconsistent, The Art of Agony is a generally decent effort that is worth hearing if one is in the mood for unapologetic sensory assault. ~ Alex Henderson Vicious Circle Art Of Agony Songs Art Of Agony Review

Art Of Agony album
$12.69 Nevermore's sixth album arrives bearing few surprises -- which, for a band less accomplished or too comfortable in their niche, would generally be seen as a negative attribute. Not here, as Seattle's finest mid-'00s heavy metal outfit (sorry Queensr˙che!) continue to set the bar for purist-leaning metal-heads on this side of the pond. As always, and not to take anything away from their cohorts (particularly drummer extraordinaire Van Williams), the soaring vocals of Warrel Dane and lead guitar heroics of Jeff Loomis act as twin beacons shining out from the band's gloriously metallic bulk. Furthermore, it's arguable if Dane (now almost completely divorced from his once too strident upper registers) has ever sounded quite this aggressive on any of Nevermore's earlier albums (witness his coarse roars on opener "Born (The Retribution of Spiritual Sickness)"). Likewise subject to discussion is whether Loomis hasn't topped his not inconsiderable prior achievements with his ever tasteful and inventive solos, here augmented by ex-Dragon Lord guitarist ...
| | Megadeth Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good! CD (1985) Remix
Art Of Agony CD music
$8.15 After guitarist Dave Mustaine was booted out of Metallica in 1983, he immediately returned home to San Francisco and formed Megadeth. The new outfit was instantly compared to Mustaine's former band, and the comparisons haven't subsided since. Whereas both outfits shared such musical elements as muted guitar riffs and speedy rhythms, Megadeth's first album seemed to be more influenced by punk and hardcore. KILLING IS MY BUSINESS AND BUSINESS IS GOOD also saw Mustaine's debuting his lead-vocal skills.
Mustaine must have had a lot of pent-up anger to express, since KILLING is simply explosive from beginning to end. The brutal title track lyrically deals with a sniper who revels in hunting down his unsuspecting prey. Nancy Sinatra's hit "These Boots are Made For Walking" is redone as a blinding speed metal ditty. Other highlights include the album opening "Last Rites/Loved to Death" and the pro-heavy metal "Rattlehead." The album-closing "Mechanix" had previously surfaced-as "The Four Horsemen," with different lyrics-on Metallica's debut KILL 'EM ALL. While not as exceptional as Megadeth's subsequent albums, KILLING proves that Mustaine is a survivor.

| | Megadeth Endgame CD (2009)
Art Of Agony music CDs
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- ...
