For its inaugural release, the City Centre Offices subsidiary Büro introduced the Gentlemen Losers, a peaceful post-rock duo from Finland. Past the short walk-in "An Empire of Coins," one immediately thinks of Mogwai and Below the Sea -- for the laid-back feel, the slight melancholia, and the medium durations -- with a touch of Low's post-Morricone twang. All these elements are found in the first few tracks, "Gold Dust Afternoon" and "Slow Guitars" standing out as highlights (and the guitars are not the only slow instruments: piano, glockenspiel, and bassoon also crawl around in that particular piece). Further down the track list, the Kuukka brothers remind listeners of their Scandinavian roots; the pastoral hymn "Laureline" and the particular melodicism of "Light Fandango" evoke Bo Hansson and the duo Sagor & Swing. Samu Kuukka's keyboards and Ville Kuukka's acoustic and electric guitars are backed by beatboxes, real drums, and mallet percussion, all providing a diverse and changing sound palette. Even though the Gentlemen Losers' debut clearly operates within the limits of a specific style, it offers a lot to like, from seducing melodies to intelligent arrangements -- and it is less bleak than most albums in that vein. A strong first effort from a group worth keeping an ear toward. ~ François Couture

The Wire (p.71) - "The brothers weave lazy acoustic and electric guitar parts through hazy synthesized chords, adding dusty handclaps and hesitant percussion as the songs drift through imagined glimmering dusks and distant smoky dawns." Gentlemen Losers Review

Gentlemen Losers CD music
$9.79 FAT OF THE LAND was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Album.
Among the most anticipated releases of 1997, The Prodigy's third full-length album is a bulldozing rock-techno hybrid. But while the guitar/samples/hyper-beats mosaic that made "Firestarter" an MTV breakout are found in every nook and cranny of this album, the overall building blocks are far more diverse, making it a tangible melting pot of pre-millennium pop styles.
There's a definite hip-hop element here. "Diesel Power," which features quality mic control by Kool Keith (of Ultramagnetic MCs and Dr. Octagon ...
| | Four Horsemen Gettin' Pretty Good...At Barely Gettin' By CD (1996)
Gentlemen Losers music CDs
$9.59 The Four Horsemen were quite literally a shattered band come 1996. Five years on from their simplistic but infectious retro-rock debut, they'd been dropped by Def American, been abandoned by their main songwriter guiding force in founding guitarist Haggis, and, most heartbreaking of all, lost drummer Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery to a drug overdose. As the band's last remaining original members, it came down to guitarist Dave Lizmi and troubled singer Frank C. Starr (more on him later) to assemble a new lineup and attempt to shoulder the load themselves on the snidely named Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By. And they did an OK job. The album still featured much of the Four Horsemen's stripped-down, hard-rocking style, but standout cuts such as "Hot Rod" and the poignant "Song for Absent Friends" generally lacked the Southern Skynyrd flavor, and especially the power boogie AC/DC crunch ...

| | Massive Attack Protection CD (1994)
Gentlemen Losers CD music
$11.95 Bristol's trip-hop pioneers crystallize their melancholic splendor on PROTECTION. It's a simmering shadow of a soundtrack to urban life, where dub, hip-hop, electronica and soul mesh into something quite singular. Imagine the chilling threnody of scene-mates Portishead allied with rough dancehall, club and South Bronx bass-beats, set ablaze by Mushroom, 3-D and Daddy-G's sour gaze into the millennial horizon. A host of fine guest vocalists help drive the vocal tunes, in turn making the instrumentals stand out all the more.
It is a juxtaposition of cold and hot, alienation and unity, that informs PROTECTION. Tracey Thorn of Everything But The Girl steals the show with her sure, silky vocals ...

Gentlemen Losers songs
$13.35 Indian percussionist and composer Karsh Kale's second effort for the Six Degrees label offers further evidence that the man is simply incapable of producing a boring album. On Realize, his full-length debut (not counting his many remix credits and studio appearances with such artists as Sting, Bill Laswell, and Herbie Hancock), Kale promiscuously blended electronica, classical Indian music, and rock & roll, and he does so again on Liberation. But he avoids repeating himself by incorporating orchestral strings on several tracks (courtesy of the Madras Chamber Orchestra) and by refining his approach somewhat, doing more with fewer musical elements. The neat and tidy jungle beats, distorto bass, and melismatic female vocals on "Instinct" may not be exceptionally innovative, but they sure work well, and the incongruously titled "Dirty Fellow" is both melodically sweet and headbangingly funky. The album's two highlight tracks are "Milan," ...
| | David Bowie Reality CD (2003) Japan; +1 Bonus Track
Gentlemen Losers album
$37.35 "New Killer Star" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Based on the success David Bowie had by resurrecting his collaborative relationship with producer Tony Visconti on 2002's stellar HEATHEN, Bowie returned to the well with Visconti for its follow-up, REALITY. The result finds this New York City resident using his adopted hometown and cozy domestic life as impetus for another batch of fine millennial manna.
Featuring the backing of talented musicians such as guitarist Earl Slick, pianist Mike Garson, and drummer Sterling Campbell, the sound that permeates these 11 songs ranges from the SCARY MONSTERS-era shuffle of "Never Get Old" to the stripped-down, late-night lounge aura of "Bring Me the Disco King," a song dappled by Garson's piano runs and dusted off by Bowie after laying around ...
