Lhasa's earlier work included arrangements that drew on ranchera and Gypsy music, as well as American, Canadian, and Mexican folk, French chanson, and pop. The international flavor is more subtle on LHASA, without vanishing entirely. The songs on the album all deal with love, usually of the obsessive, hopeless, and doomed variety, and even at her most seductive, as on the subtle rock/tango "The Lonely Spider," Lhasa's vocals hint at grief and despair. Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Mark Dwinell's made his name as a member of the excellent psych/drone group Bright, but under his solo guise of Nonloc he takes an enjoyably different path, with a series of songs paying open and specific homage to the minimalist looping style of such composers as Philip Glass and Steve Reich, among others. The resultant Between Hemispheres album creates an intriguing tension between this compositional approach and the instrumentation used to create it, relying on a variety of folk and rock instruments instead of classical ones. The effect is of a brisk, often bubbling and energetic kind of rock and roll that has antecedents (once or twice the work of early Spiritualized comes to mind) but feels newly fresh in this context -- not a traditional band performance as such, but detailed enough to be a futuristic ensemble as much as a solo overdubbed creation (as it actually is).
