A collection of protest songs that takes the Bush administration directly to task for their actions in Iraq and elsewhere, LIVING WITH WAR boils with outrage and aches with pathos (the grungy, midtempo opener "After the Garden" is a fine example of the latter). "Let's Impeach the President" and "Lookin' for a Leader" leave little question as to Young's opinion of George W., while the crunching, electric-guitar-heavy feel of the album underscores Young's bitter aggression. The album draws on the artist's lineage to the socially conscious activism of the 1960s, yet it feels energized, angry, contemporary, and timely, further highlighting Young's status as one of rock's longest-running and most integrity-driven heroes.
Neil Young has never been one to avoid political commentary. Ever since "Ohio," his classic anthem of moral outrage about the Kent State student massacre in 1970, Young's music has pulled no punches about the injustices of American policy both foreign and domestic. 2006's LIVING WITH WAR continues that trend; in fact, the album is the most overtly political of Young's long, dazzling career.
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals); Tommy Bray (trumpet); Rick Rosas (bass instrument); Chad Cromwell (drums).
Rolling Stone (p.226) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n indictment of the sorry state of open debate in this country...It is also an impressive measure of Young's refusal to burn out or fade away that he states his case with clarity as well as dirty garage-trio momentum." Entertainment Weekly (p.82) - "The power-trio arrangements have a let-it-rip simplicity; the lyrics are like stream-of-consciousness postings." -- Grade: B+ Q (p.113) - 4 stars out of 5-- "[A] revelation, brimming with passion and some of the best melodies Young has penned in the last 30 years." Q (p.121) - Ranked #38 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "A rare and vital victory for mixing politics and rock." Magnet (p.115) - "The album captured the country's disenchantment with a war it no longer supported..." The Wire (p.49) - "Now well into his fifth decade as a recording artist, Young remains a gratifyingly unpredicatable proposition, as restless and instinctive as ever." Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Urgent, instant, bolshie mostly, with a stronger individual sense than, say, GREENDALE..." Since I agree with what he is saying on here it is one of my favorites. Its a must for any fan of Neil's, and a must for anybody that is displeased with this administration. We need my artists to put out an album like this, but let's leave it to Neil to do it the best. Submitted by johnacarolyne (Dallas, Texas) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

He didn't forget! Most of the criticism of this release is total nonsense. "He's not American!" Truth is truth, no matter the source. And besides, his releases from ages ago were also critical of the US government. "He forgot about 9/11!" No, the problem isn't that he forgot, it's that many people fail to see the war in Iraq as the non sequitur that it was and is. This is a good disc that speaks the truth, with solid musical underpinnings. It has the rough edge of classic Neil Young, and the choir is a nice touch. "War is a Racket." so said USMC Major General Smedley Butler after the fascist's tried to get him to murder FDR.
The Bush neo-cons on this review page are pathetic. You should have served in the military IF you love war and the Bush admin so much.
I give it about 4 stars musically and many more for the social /political statement.

$9.19 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. Critics were sharply divided over this album, some hailing it as a masterpiece and some dismissing it as a tossed-off trifle. Longtime Young fans will notice right away that GREENDALE's raw, minimalistic sound and quirky songs hearken back to such gloriously off-kilter 1970s releases as ZUMA and TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. This is a "concept album," but it's one of the few instances in rock history ...

Living With War
$9.75 The most striking characteristic of the album is its mood, which is heavily nostalgic, melancholy, and, lyrically, full of reflections on memory, loss, and mortality. (The passing of Young's father and his own experience with a brain aneurysm seem likely influences for the tone here). In this way, it ...

Living With War
$13.95 2006: Icon Mink Stole is fronting Viir Exeter's Electro Jazz project, Biomechanic, fusing Electro, Jazz and Dark Cabaret. The debut album, Exogenesis, is currently in production.2004/5:Viir Exeter, of Oxygen Law, has composed the original score for The Boles Murders, a major motion picture about an entire family that was brutally murdered in their exclusive California resort home in 1965. Private Investigator, Steve Hodel, New York Times best-selling author of, The Black Dahlia Avenger, is among the many who give expert insights into the notorious murders. The case remains unsolved to this day.Oxygen LawLe Vestibule EPreviewed by Matthew Heilman of Starvox, PhiladelphiaHailing from California, Oxygen Law's most recent EP was an interesting offering to say the very least. I was pleasantly won over by the nostalgic shades of vintage 4AD elements that could be found in the grayed synths and modest electronics of the first half of this EP. The title tracks are pretty cool, the LP version of the song being a bit more punchy than the extended version, but both feature a delightful mix of slow old school drum machines and swirling orchestration. "Perihelion" is perhaps a better and more solid example of what Oxygen Law is capable of. A plodding, tense track that centers around a steady rhythmic pulse, a smooth bass line, and moody male vocals. This track in particular vaguely recalls early Clan Of Xymox, and it is kind of cool that a band is more conscious of atmosphere than BPM's, the way early dark electronic bands were. And indeed, Oxygen Law is conscious of atmosphere. Citing not only 4AD artists as creative influences, they also site the Brontë sisters and Edgar Allan Poe as musical muses, and indeed the misty moors and stark psychology of those authors cast a favourable shadow over the band. Somewhat in the more 'electronic' friendly tracks but this influence is clearer on the EP's two epic instrumental tracks. There is an authentic classical darkness that pervades these last two works, the two unlikely ...
