(1 Customer Review)
Recorded in the English countryside with producer Ben Hillier (Doves, Elbow), the Futureheads' sophomore album, NEW AND TRIBUTES, finds the Sunderland-based quartet building on their crisp, punchy self-titled debut. On this outing, the group offers up its trademark euphoric four-part vocal harmonies, while tempering fierce guitar lines and hard-hitting rhythms with more expansive and melodic arrangements. The wonderfully catchy single "Skip to the End" reinforces the Futureheads' link to revered New Wave post-punk acts, particularly, in this case, XTC. Those who favor the Futureheads' more aggressive side will be pleased by the furious "Return of the Berserker," but, overall, the disc goes for a thoughtful, multi-layered approach, as evinced on the melodic track, "Back to the Sea." Easily one of the finest British rock releases of 2006, NEW AND TRIBUTES is the sound of a youthful band maturing while still retaining its initial verve.
The Futureheads: Ross Millard, Barry Hyde (vocals, guitar); Jaff (vocals, bass guitar); Peter Brewis (vocals, drums).
Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[O]n NEWS AND TRIBUTES, the Futureheads make punk that's packed with ideas and downright radiant." Q (p.115) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[With] tricksy song structures and lyrics that invoke nuclear catastrophe....A unique force in modern pop..." Alternative Press (p.218) - 4 out of 5 -- "[T]he band's second act sees their four-part yodel parties toned down, their guitars less excitable and their ambitions grander -- and yet there's still nobody that sounds like 'em." News And Tributes
$7.09 At first listen, the Futureheads recall other early-2000s post-punk revivalists. But while the band take notable cues from icons like XTC (particularly in their heavy, biting British accents) and Gang of Four (the revered group's Andy Gill produces numerous tracks here), they also display a penchant for unique, memorable songcraft that sets them apart from their peers. Particularly notable is the ensemble's use of complex, layered vocals (note the a cappella tune "Danger of the Water"), with harmonies and choral parts ringing out among the thunderous assault of guitars, bass, and ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
News And Tributes
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") ...
| | Kaiser Chiefs Employment CD (2005)
News And Tributes
$8.49 Emerging in an era rife with New Wave rip-off artists, the Kaiser Chiefs ran the risk of their sharp suits, angular haircuts, and early-1980s influences being taken the wrong way. While many of their peers shamelessly aped the most obvious aspects of the Cure, New Order, et al, Kaiser Chiefs (the ...
| | New Pornographers Twin Cinema CD (2005)
News And Tributes
$10.15 The follow-up to indie-rock collective New Pornographers' lauded ELECTRIC VERSION, 2005's TWIN CINEMA expands on that album's power-pop sound. Here the group, masterminded by singer/multi-instrumentalist A.C. Newman, has added a new member--vocalist/pianist Kathryn Calder (Newman's niece)--while both the songwriting and arrangements have become more adventurous.
The energetic title track sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Wire and Big Star, while "The Bones of an Idol" recalls mid-1970s Brian Eno. As always, alt-country star Neko Case steals the show, particularly on "These Are the Fables," an urgent, piano-based tune that spotlights her potent Patsy Cline-on-caffeine vocals. Destroyer's Dan Bejar also contributes a handful ...
| | Arctic Monkeys Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not CD (2006)
News And Tributes
$11.59 Reportedly the fastest-selling debut in British history at the time of its early-2006 release, the Arctic Monkeys' WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT'S WHAT I'M NOT is a brash, hook-filled album that immediately warrants music fans' attention, if perhaps not all of the pre-release hype. Clearly taking notes on the evolution of U.K. punk, the Sheffield-based band reveal the influence of revered predecessors such as the Jam and the Clash, while most notably evoking the Libertines in their youthful, hood-rat persona. On this hyperactive 13-track set, singer/guitarist Alex Turner is armed with an arsenal of sharply observed ...
