An absolute MUST !!!! Is this CD any good? What?!?!!! This CD is off the charts. I've been recommending it to any and everyone I come across, both those who normally listen to gospel music, and those who do not--the tracks are hot enough to grab you and have you jammin' along before you realize exactly what you're listening to. And by then, you're hooked!! GET THIS CD!!! You won't regret it. Submitted by Tee (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

All About You album
$14.29 Try Me Again shows how fully formed Burrell's unique gospel style was even at the beginning of her career. Beginning with its soulful opener, "Prayer Changes Things," which has the jazzy, mellow feel of an early Roberta Flack side, Try Me Again is that rarity, a gospel album more dependent on gentle understatement than revival tent fervor. Even on the most impassioned tracks, like the choir-supported "Home," Burrell sings with easy grace, never over-souling her songs with unnecessary melisma or other grating vocal tics, and her production emphasizes rootsy, old-school instrumentation instead of the glossy synths that have crept into so many CCM albums. All in all, Try Me Again is a sensational debut that matches Kim Burrell's better-known later albums and deserves a wider profile. ~ Stewart Mason

All About You album
$7.59 Tye Tribbett gives gospel a shot in the arm with VICTORY LIVE!, a concert performance that features Tribbett and his choir and band going full-tilt for the Lord. Tribbett's not afraid to tweak the formula of traditional gospel to achieve new forms of uplifting music by incorporating elements of R&B, rock, hip-hop, Celtic, and other styles (note the go-go beat in "Victory"). Yet Tribbett and company never stray far from their roots, as the tent revival feel of "Still Have Joy" proves. Connecting these musical ...

| | Wally Shoup Confluxus CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
All About You album
$18.69 Is anyone else under the impression that Leo Feigin replaced Ivo Perelman with Wally Shoup in his roster? Both saxophonists display the same kind of vital energy verging on the unbearably direct, and both have lined up album after album for Leo Records -- Perelman in the '90s, Shoup well on his way to do the same in the 2000s. Confluxus is significantly different than the two Wally Shoup Trio recordings between which it is sandwiched. The music is less ecstatic, more nuanced, with moments of near-silent tension and a slightly more romantic form of lyricism than what Shoup has gotten us used to. Drummer Toshi Makihara was part of the album Hurricane Floyd (with Thurston Moore), and cellist Brent Arnold is a regular member of the saxophonist's main outfit Project W. So, going into this live radio session (for Jack Straw's Sonarchy Radio show in Seattle), all three of them were very much acquainted. The session takes the shape of a near-continuous 45-minute performance. It starts in the kind of high-energy free improv style you'd expect from ...

All About You music CDs
$16.45 Michael William Gilbert - Synthesizers, wood flute, voice, prepared piano, guitar & percussion "I find much contemporary and electronic music suffers from a coldness or soullessness; as a result, I have tried to make mine a more human music, a fusion of synthesized, instrumental, and natural sounds. When composing, I electronically orchestrate each piece into a soundscape. The music is not just a simple mixture, but a genuine synthesis of pan-cultural musical styles. Above all, I want to make my music sing!"Michael William Gilbert grew up in Connecticut and Brussels, Belgium. It was while living in Europe that he first encountered the music of Varese and Pierre Henry, as well as the musics of India, Africa, and Japan. After studying electrical engineering at MIT, he continued studies in music at the Boston School of Electronic Music, where he later worked as a teacher and designer of custom synthesis systems. He graduated with a degree in music from Hampshire College and shortly thereafter became the technical director of electronic music at Amherst College, Smith College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts/Amherst. He has taught electronic music at the University of Massachusetts and at Holyoke Community College.Gilbert has been composing and recording actively since the 1970's. In 1978 he released his first recording, "Moving Pictures", on the GIBEX label. "Moving Pictures" takes a step towards humanizing electronic music with prominent use of wooden flutes, percussion, and voice to complement the synthesized textures of the compositions. "The Call", Gilbert's second album, is a more mature realization of his goal to create a more human music. It grew out of the desire to set new jazz influenced solo parts against a background of drone, percussion, and environment evocative of Eastern musics."The Call" marked Gilbert's first collaboration with multi-wind and reed player Tim Moran, avant-garde percussionist/vocalist David Moss, and bassist Salvatore Macchia. "In the Dreamtime", initially released on the Palace of Lights label, is a refinement of work begun on the first two records. This album uses the theme of dream imagery, exploring and merging the distinctions between electronics, new jazz, and world music, and also features collaborations with Moran, Moss, and Macchia. His first releases on CD, "The Light in the Clouds" and "Point of Views", bridge the gaps between diverse world musics. A collaboration with master percussionist Tony Vacca, acoustic bassist Salvatore Macchia, and synthesist Roy Finch, "The Light in the Clouds" brings together African, Jewish, Christian, and Shinto musical traditions and melds them with crystal clear sounds and rhythms into one music. "Point of Views" is a stunning solo recording realized within a MIDI based studio, weaving elements of jazz, world, electronic ...
