| | Sexappeal Mal O Bien CD Sexappeal Discography of CDs
Dominican salsa bad boy Sexappeal is back for round two after the solid success of his debut disc, Necesito Mas. Having garnered a Top Ten Tropical Billboard hit with "Meniando La Cola," Sexappeal made an impression upon the industry and audiences alike. Before his vocal career took off and he adopted a more macho handle, Anthony Rodriguez had worked as both a professional dancer and later a percussionist. High impact performances and impressive range force listeners to question how an artist of such vocal prowess and style could ever have sown his creative seeds elsewhere. His involvement with the "United Latinos for Salsa" project in 2001 provided the exposure necessary to connect him with the powerhouse Dominican label, J&N Records. Both for his emotive performances and improvisational ability, Sexappeal reveals himself to be the Dominican Republic's shining salsa star. The much anticipated 2006 release Mal o Bien was anticipated with high expectations and did not disappoint. Joined by famous pianist and producer/arranger Ramón Orlando, musical excellence does not run out with the frontman. Orlando has worked with some of the industry's most notable, including "Jose "El Canario" Alberto," Elvis Crespo, and Joseph Fonseca, and continues to be one of the tropical music's most in demand producers. Eleven tracks of energetic, driving salsa will barely leave dancers a moment to catch their breath. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
Personnel: Luis Columna, Jose Luis Mateo (trumpet); Marcos Valoy (trombone); Ramón Orlando (piano); Elias Soriano, Isaias Leclerc (electric bass).

$8.45 This longtime salsa favorite -- with the help of a little reinvention -- tops the charts once again with his 2006 record, Salsa con Reggaetón. In an effort to synthesize the old and the new, the classic and the fresh, the Univision label employed the talents of top Latin music producers Ramon B. Sanchez and Sergio George, both of whom need only touch a project for it to turn to gold. Montañez, a veteran of the world famous El Gran Combo, a crown in the Puerto Rican salsa crown, collaborated with some ...

| | Deanna Varagona Goodbyes Have All Been Taken CD (2003)
Mal O Bien album
$13.85 It has been said in reviews of Deanna Varagona's first album, 2000's Tangled Messages, but bears repeating, that, as a solo artist (or even, as here, leading her own trio), Varagona does not make music that is remotely reminiscent lyrically of Lambchop, the band of which she has been a member since 1993. Lambchop is a vehicle for the quirky songs of Kurt Wagner, and Varagona, while singing along and playing multiple instruments, doesn't have writing credits with the group. Her solo career is very different. She wrote ten of 12 songs on this disc and co-wrote an 11th with bass player Joe Ferguson, who, with newly added drummer Jimmy Earley, makes up the Deanna Varagona Trio. (The 12th selection is a cover of Hazel Dickens' "My Better Years.") And her songs are direct statements of romantic passion and frustration, not the more impressionistic expressions of Wagner's compositions for Lambchop. She sets these songs to spare country and folk arrangements and sings them with an aching twang. This is an austere and emotional collection that often sounds like music that came down from the mountains many years ago rather than being newly written and recorded. ~ William Ruhlmann
Gadfly Records is proud to announce the release of The Goodbyes Have All Been Taken. Hello, the new release from alt-country songstress Deanna Varagona.Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Deanna Varagona cuts a wide swath with this collection that ranges from folk to twang, and she shines on each track. A member of cult band Lambchop, Varagona's craft at songwriting shines --- she doesn't forget to include a melody! - and her voice goes from Patsy Cline to K.D. Lang and back. An American original, Varagona won't be mistaken for somebody else!Deanna creates a sparse yet dynamic backdrop to highlight her poetic lyrics reminiscent of early Etta James' passion and Bessie Smith's wiles. She lays her southern soul bare with a passion born in the Appalachian Mountains but bred in a world of a punk rock youth. ...
| | U.K. Sue Story: The World Of Guy Stevens CD (2004) (Import) United Kingdom
Mal O Bien CD music
$17.09 As a branch of the then-young Island label, Sue Records put out over 100 singles in the U.K. between 1963 and 1968, most of them American soul tracks licensed for the British market, with some blues and early rock & roll/R&B thrown in as well. This is a compilation of 30 tracks that appeared on Sue 45s, and like the Sue release schedule, it's weighted heavily toward '60s soul, with a bit of blues and R&B too, a few of the tracks dating from before Sue's actual 1963 launch (indeed, one, Elmore James' "Dust My Blues," goes all the way back to 1955). As for the possibly confusing subtitle of the CD, the label was run by Guy Stevens, more famous for later producing Free, Mott the Hoople, and the Clash, but in the mid-'60s known as one of Britain's foremost soul/R&B collectors and club DJs. Although this anthology contains much good music and is a representative sampling of Sue's output, it's a bit of an inconsistent listen for those not particularly interested in the Sue tie-in, drawing from all over the map of American soul/R&B/blues. There are some classic hits (in the U.S. at any rate; they were cult items in the U.K.) of varying size, like Inez & Charlie Foxx's "Mockingbird," Chris Kenner's original version of "Land of 1,000 Dances," Ike & Tina Turner's "I Can't Believe What You Say," and Bobby Parker's great overlooked, ahead-of-its-time early (1961) soul outing "Watch Your Step." There are also some excellent tracks known these days primarily to collectors, like Baby Washington's lush early soul ballad "That's How Heartaches Are Made," Derek Martin's raucous "Daddy Rollin' Stone" (covered by the Who on the B-side of their second U.K. single), Wilbert Harrison's 1962 single "Let's Stick Together" (which he remade for his 1970 hit "Let's ...
