| | Jennifer Hudson CD (2008)
On The Verge CD music
$15.19 It's Hudson's confident, flexible singing that gives this debut its gleam.
Jennifer Hudson's name and voice were already well known to the general public by the time her first album appeared in 2008. Hudson's appearance on AMERICAN IDOL, and her starring role in the film DREAMGIRLS, introduced her as a talent to be reckoned with. Her self-titled debut, a sleek collection of contemporary R&B, reinforces that impression. Lead single "Spotlight," a moody, midtempo groover, kicks things off and is one of the disc's highlights, along with the Timbaland-produced "Pocketbook" featuring Ludacris, and "I'm His Only Woman," a duet with Fantasia. Elsewhere, T-Pain guests on "What's Wrong (Go Away)." But while the guest spots speckle the album with variety, it's Hudson's confident, flexible singing that give this debut its gleam.

| | Earth, Wind, And Fire Playlist: The Very Best Of Earth Wind & Fire CD (2008) Digipak
On The Verge CD music
$9.25 Among the most musically accomplished and commercially successful of the large-scale funk ensembles of the '70s, Earth, Wind & Fire had a meteoric rise from obscure Afro-influenced jazz-funk group to chart-topping R&B superstars. Led by their charismatic songwriter and front man, Maurice White, EWF's infectious blend of powerhouse funk rhythms and positive spiritual messages had won them mainstream popularity by the late '70s. Focused on the ensemble's signature hits of the late '70s and early '80s, PLAYLIST contains such ...

| | DJ Krush Ki-Oku CD (1999)
On The Verge songs
$10.15 KI-OKU sounds both primitive and futuristic at once, with an overall vibe that owes a significant debt to Miles Davis's late-period electric albums. Alternately abstract and groove-driven, Krush's thick, rhythmic patterns and Kondo's processed trumpet, which sometimes sounds like a wild animal struggling through the forest, recall classic, early-1970s Miles compositions like "He Loved Him Madly." But KI-OKU, with its scratching and electronics, is quite contemporary, and its mix of genres, moods, and references makes for a mesmerizing listen.
Japanese turntable master DJ Krush pairs up with trumpeter Toshinori Kondo on this moody set that combines hip-hop, jazz, and ambient music. Though Kondo's resume includes work with such left-field figures as Derek Bailey, John Zorn, and Fred Frith, KI-OKU has none of the avant-skronk associated with those artists. In large part, that's due to Krush's wide, atmospheric textures, and languid, mid-tempo break-beats, which both soften and anchor ...

On The Verge CD music
$15.95 This set features some of Joe "King" Oliver's later 1930 recordings for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Though in the early '20s Oliver had employed artists of the caliber of the trumpeter Louis Armstrong and the clarinetist and saxophonist Johnny Dodds, by the turn of the decade these performers were long gone, and the bandleader was suffering from a painful gum disease which made stand-ins necessary for most of his solos. However, his acumen in choosing talented musicians is still very much apparent in the performances of such figures as the pianist James P. Johnson and the trumpeters Bubber Miley and Henry "Red" Allen. Highlights include the classic "St. James Infirmary" and a spirited version of "Frankie and Johnny."
King Oliver & His Orchestra's classic 1929/1930 recordings. Featuring the talents of Dave Nelson, Punch Miller, ...
