| | Silver Mountain Universe CD Silver Mountain Discography of CDs
Domestically available for the first time on CD is the sophomore release by Sweden's Silver Mountain. Originally released in 1984, UNIVERSE revealed a revamped and tightened incarnation of the band. Incorporating classical passages for the first time, Silver Mountain is much more musically focused here as they shed the early Deep Purple influence and add touches of gothic rock to their sound. The result is that UNIVERSE established this band as a driving force in the Scandinavian metal community. Although the Johansson brothers had already left to join Yngwie Malmsteen's band prior to the recording of this milestone, Silver Mountain's second release is actually more dynamic than the band's debut. Universe album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

| | Judas Priest Painkiller CD (1990) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Universe album
$6.75 Judas Priest's 1990 release, PAINKILLER, shows the band returning to ferocious metal after such musical detours as 1986's TURBO. It also proved to be the British band's last outing with original singer Rob Halford. Drummer Scott Travis (ex-Racer X) makes his Priest debut here, while the sound and songwriting is comparable to thrash/speed metal.
The album-opening title track is one of Priest's heaviest and greatest songs (brace yourself before it kicks in!), and the band takes no prisoners on such titles as "Hell Patrol" and "A Touch of Evil." An inspired way to close out Halford-era Priest.
At the dawn of the '90s, Judas Priest were in sad shape: out of touch, seemingly creatively bankrupt, coming off the two worst albums of their career, and left for dead by many observers. Trying to right the ship, Priest jettisoned longtime producer Tom Allom and his tinny '80s sound, as well as the serviceable groove drumming of Dave Holland, and brought in veteran metal producer Chris Tsangarides and onetime Racer X skinsman Scott Travis. Most importantly, though, Priest stopped trying to be a stadium act in the midst of hair metal's heyday. All those changes come into sharp focus as soon as the title cut of Painkiller ...
| | Atreyu Congregation Of The Damned CD (2009)
Universe CD music
$11.65 On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach. Like their last album, the songs here feel somewhat restrained, like they're just dying to break free of the polished production. The intensity of SUICIDE NOTES and BUTTERFLY KISSES seems to have been put out to pasture, with the songs feeling more deliberately poppy.
On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach, which is both good and bad. While it's interesting to see a band grow and deviate from its tried and true formula, this album feels a little toothless. The acerbic fire of their earlier work has been all but snuffed out, at times feeling more like hard rock than metal. ...
| | Motown Legends, Vol. 1 CD (1995)
Universe music CDs
$5.89 Unfortunately, throughout the '80s and '90s Motown took advantage of the burgeoning CD movement, endlessly packaging and repackaging chart-topping hits from the label's massive collection. This led to a flood of budget-line compilations that helped to keep Motown afloat during the leanest of ...

$11.39 After the fierce, politically charged HOUSES OF THE MOLE and its companion piece, RANTOLOGY, Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen launches another anti-George W. Bush sonic invective with RIO GRANDE BLOOD. Amazingly, this 2006 outing manages to be even more scathing than the aforementioned releases, due to yet another round of strategically placed and cleverly manipulated sound bites (particularly on ...

Universe music CDs
$15.19 Steve Savitzky is a hacker/songwriter who learned both hacking (in its original sense of "programming for fun") and folksinging back in the 1960's; he discovered organized science fiction fandom and filk, its indigenous folk music (i.e. was dragged to his first SF convention) in 1978, and wrote his first "real" filksong shortly thereafter. About half of his songs are about computers; some, like "The World Inside the Crystal", are even serious. He occasionally performs as part of a group called "Tres Gique".In his professional life as a computer scientist ...
| | Denny Lee The Truth CD (2008)
Universe songs
$10.15 the whole truth and nothing but the truth has very little meaning in today's world. It is completely ignored by our government, our politicians and especially, our law enforcement. As I put it so gently in one verse of my song taken from 'Uncle Sam's World' 'they wouldn't know the truth if it bit them in the ass.' What this CD represents is an honest look at our world as it is today. One out of every hundred people in our United States of America is a convicted felon. We have become the laughing stock of the world. This CD wasn't meant to be pretty, it was meant to be nasty. It was meant to be listened too and it was meant to tell people the truth. Those of you on probation are feeling 'Johnny Law' and you'll know what I'm referring to in these songs. I cover a lot of territory in these songs but I also speak the truth. This CD will be bought by those that believe our country is going to hell in a hand-basket in a hurry. This CD will be bought by people that are rebels against what the United States of America has to offer them. Probation Gods refers to the Probation Officer and what is said is the truth believe it or not. I know someone on probation and believe me; these people think they are God. The Department of Correction should be re-named the Department of Corruption because that's what they are doing to our young people. They aren't curing anything, because they are the problem not the solution. The song Lawyers in General points out if you don't have the money, you will go to jail. ...
