On her third studio album, LOOSE, Nelly Furtado largely abandons the bohemian vibe of previous outings, opting for an energetic, club-ready sound said to be influenced by the time she spent recording in Miami. The Canadian-born singer-songwriter approaches this significant change with wild abandon, as revealed on the sensual singles "Promiscuous," a remarkably catchy dance-pop tune that features Timbaland, and "Maneater," a leering, techno-tinged track. The percussive "No Hay Igual" finds Furtado delving into reggaeton, while "Te Busque" presents the soulful vocalist performing a melancholy duet with Colombian heartthrob Juanes. Though some Furtado fans may initially be perplexed by this dramatic sonic shift, repeated listens reveal the record's charms, particularly on the soaring, synth-laden opener "Afraid" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)," a thoughtful pop ballad co-penned by Coldplay's Chris Martin (who was once rumored to be her boyfriend). A suprise, after her review unworthy album Folklore. Really. I bought Folklore, hated it so much that it went to the garbage can after 4 songs. This album was not what i expected to follow. A huge change in sound, extremely noticable with Promiscuous and Maneater,a more girl rap feeling to it than i like...but she did excellent on Say it Right, and pleased me to no end with All Good Things Come To An End. That song is beautiful, and, with its seemingly orchestrated sadness puts a different kind of burning sensation in your heart than most other 'sad' pop songs do. Worth the buy just on the account of All Good Things.

Another collection of inspired pop pastiche and four-track dementia, 1991's The Pod is nearly as long as GodWeenSatan: The Oneness but even weirder and more deranged, due in large part to the band's Scotchguard habit and the severe cases of mononucleosis Gene and Dean Ween contracted while recording the album. As a result, The Pod is dark and murky, with a slightly distant, fuzzy feel. On some songs, such as the cryptic, prog-inspired "Right to the Ways and the Rules of the World," the psych-tinged "Dr. Rock," and the mystic hard rock of "Captain Fantasy," this sound works well, but on others -- like the opening track "Strap on That Jammypac" -- it just doesn't fit. Ween flexes their stylistic chops a bit on "Sorry Charlie"'s country-rock, "Sketches of Winkle"'s crazed speed metal, "Oh My Dear"'s cute four-track, and "Pork Roll Egg and Cheese"'s Beatlesque psych-pop, but the majority of The Pod, for better or worse, focuses on sludgy weirdness like "Molly," "Awesome Sound," "Laura," and "Can U Taste the Waste?" Combining two minor releases -- a live album and a remix EP -- Live in Italy & Submarine is a value-for-money purchase for fans that more casual listeners can bypass without terribly much regret. Cranes' ability to re-create their studio sound live is quite impressive for a band whose sonic attributes (besides Alison Shaw's startlingly wispy babytalk vocals) sound on record like they're the results of much Cocteau Twins-style effects and processing, but that unfortunately means that when one gets right down to it, Live in Italy is basically a live album that's more or less indistinguishable from the studio records. Submarine is a nine-track remix EP with four mixes each of the two singles from Cranes' comeback album Future Songs, "Submarine" and "Don't Wake Me Up," along with one mellow down-tempo version of "Driving in the Sun" from the same album. The mixes vary only slightly in mood and arrangement, and the collection as a whole is strictly for completists. ~ Stewart Mason
