REVIEWS:
| | Harrison: Suite For Violin, Etc / Bachman, Sedares, Et Al CD (1999)
Rózsa: Cello Concerto, Sinfonia Concertante / Graffin, Et Al
$9.65 Lou Harrison is a towering though somewhat underrated figure in American music. A folk-inspired composer at heart, but not in the jazz- or Americana-inspired way of Bernstein and Copland, Harrison tends to employ techniques and instruments associated with Indonesia and the Far East. For those new to Harrison, this beautifully played and recorded CD is an ideal introduction.
The Suite for Violin and Orchestra is an achingly beautiful work showing Harrison's love of long-reaching melodies. Meditative and serene (apart from the infectious dance rhythms of the second movement), this work deserves to be a concert mainstay. The Suite for Cello and Piano was originally written for two friends of Harrison's who were not professional musicians. Although this piece is deliberately free of extreme technical difficulties, it brims with Harrison's gift for melody.
The Suite for Cello and Harp is a representative work in that the sparse textures of the harp afford Harrison the ability to evoke his love of Japanese and Javanese music. The Three Waltzes have a beguiling simplicity that recall the piano music of Virgil Thomson while 'Western Dance' is an uncharacteristic work of wide dynamic range and rhythmic complexity.

Rózsa: Cello Concerto, Sinfonia Concertante / Graffin, Et Al
$7.05 International Record Review (4/00, p.31) - "...Rosenberg has...taken seriously the details of Gottschalk's notation, bringing his rhythmic daring into sharper focus - a special benifit in the exuberant dance of the second movement....For now...this is the most infectious account of this music to be had..."
