| | Pet Shop Boys Fundamental CD Pet Shop Boys Discography of CDs
The cover of 2006's FUNDAMENTAL, the Pet Shop Boys' first studio outing since '02's RELEASE (not counting their BATTLESHIP POMTEMKIN project), is strikingly stark--seemingly solid black save for the band name and album title--though a closer ... Full Descriptionlook reveals the subtle images of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe's faces. Any suggestions of anonymity or reinvention, however, are quickly jettisoned by the songs, which are very obviously the work of the British duo. Tennant's distinctively plaintive vocals and Lowe's soaring synth lines here recall their prototypical sound more than almost anything since the late 1980s. This is, at least in part, due to the group's reunion with dance-pop uber-producer Trevor Horn, who gives each track on FUNDAMENTAL a lustrous sheen, whether it's the surging club-ready tune "Minimal," the willfully melodramatic ballad "Numb," or the funky and fiercely political "I'm with Stupid" (a harsh criticism of Tony Blair and George W. Bush). A record that hints at past Pet Shop glories while remaining remarkably contemporary, FUNDMENTAL is synth-pop at its most irresistible.
Recording information: Sarm West Studios, London, England (2006).Spin (p.83) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "FUNDAMENTAL uses squelchy electro-disco grooves that smuggle sly pop-culture commentary." Entertainment Weekly (p.161) - "[The] CD finds the synth-pop pioneers still in fine form....[With] immaculate arrangements, which balance orchestral pomp with au courant club grooves." -- Grade: B+ Q (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir ninth album balances social comment you can dance to, dramatically melancholy ballads and Tennant's always sanguine musings on the pros and cons of hedonism." Q (p.123) - Ranked #23 in Q Magazine's "100 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "Songwriting-wise they seemed to have rediscovered their sharpness." | | Pet Shop Boys Disco 3 CD (2003)
Fundamental CD music
$9.19 The Pet Shop Boys interest in dance music dates all the way back to vocalist Neil Tennant's stint as a journalist working for Smash Hits in the mid-'80s, The Pet Shop Boys have periodically released remix discs pertaining to a previous studio album. DISCO 3 is the latest installment of this sporadically executed concept with last year's RELEASE getting the remix honors this time around. Among the highlights on this 10-track EP are the Giorgio Moroder-influenced "Try It (I'm in Love with A Married Man)," sturdy ambient/house hybrid "Here" (PSB New Extended Mix), and high NRG anthem "Positive Role Model." There's also the ominous-sounding electroclash workout "Time on My Hands" featuring vocals from both Tennant and creative partner Chris Lowe. The only anomaly on this collection is the closing number "London" (Genuine Piano Mix), a gorgeous ...

| | Erasure On The Road To Nashville CD (2007) With DVD
Fundamental CD music
$14.39 The third major Erasure release in three years, 2007's ON THE ROAD TO NASHVILLE continues a remarkably prolific streak for the British synth-pop duo. This live DVD/CD set, recorded in Music City's landmark Ryman Auditorium, works as a companion piece to UNION STREET, and once again finds Vince Clarke and Andy Bell in an unlikely, but intriguing, acoustic setting. Highlights of the audio disc include the swooning "Boy," the shimmering "Tenderest Moments," and a beautifully spare version of the hit "A Little Respect," all of which shine the spotlight on Bell's emotive vocals. In addition to a documentary, the DVD also presents a number of bonus performances, making NASHVILLE essential for any devoted Erasure fan.
This set was recorded live from Erasure's Union Street Acoustic Tour on May 2, 2006 in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium. The set features never before seen audio and video of reworked hits and live favorites. The DVD features the visuals of this ...

| | Van Dyke Parks Discover America CD (1972) (Import) United Kingdom
Fundamental songs
$21.29 Van Dyke Parks' DISCOVER AMERICA came four years after his audacious debut. Where SONG CYCLE created its own orchestral tapestry of poetic and hallucinogenic Americana, its successor adopted Caribbean styles. Far from leaving the USA behind, however, this record is a series of glimpses into the social, cultural and political headlines from the first half of the twentieth century in America. Herein are celebrations of the Mills Brother, Franklin Roosevelt, Jack Palance, and Bing Crosby.
Parks' interest in Trinidadian steel-drum bands was given full flower (he also produced an album by the Esso Trinidad Steel Band around this same time), and their color serves as a joyful counterpoint to string sections and small combos of guitars, bass, drums, piano and horns. It says a good deal about Parks' skills as an arranger, producer and singer that Lowell George's "Sailin' Shoes" sounds right at home on an album with Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."

| | Jeff Bruckner Take Me To The West Coast CD (2008)
Fundamental CD music
$16.45 Infectious power pop you can dance to has never sounded better than on Jeff Bruckner’s debut album, “Take Me To The West Coast.” The young, sweater-vest sporting, floppy-hair-head-bopper packs a poppy crunch into his tales of heartache and desire. Not to be outdone by wicked guitar work courtesy of Stephen Butler (Smash Palace) and a strong back beat provided by Anthony Bezich (Mezzrow),Bruckner’s strengths lie in his quirky storytelling and antihero escapades as showcased in tracks, “Chicago,” “Not Feelin’ It,” and “Murdering Man.” For the rock clubbers out there, “Quarterback Lover” and “I Never” provide chanting anthems you can move your feet to. And on “Point Of View” and “Envy ...
