Any suggestions of anonymity or reinvention, however, are quickly jettisoned by the songs, which are very obviously the work of the British duo. Tennant's distinctively plaintive vocals and Lowe's soaring synth lines here recall their prototypical sound more than almost anything since the late 1980s. This is, at least in part, due to the group's reunion with dance-pop uber-producer Trevor Horn, who gives each track on FUNDAMENTAL a lustrous sheen, whether it's the surging club-ready tune "Minimal," the willfully melodramatic ballad "Numb," or the funky and fiercely political "I'm with Stupid" (a harsh criticism of Tony Blair and George W. Bush). A record that hints at past Pet Shop glories while remaining remarkably contemporary, FUNDMENTAL is synth-pop at its most irresistible.

Still chugging along three decades after members of Houston garage bands the Moving Sidewalks and the American Blues united in 1970, this little ol' band from Texas makes its mark on 2003 with MESCALERO, the trio's first album in four years. As one of the first blues-rock power trios to fuse synthesizers with their straightforward brand of boogie, ZZ Top continues down this same path throughout these 16 songs. The difference is the Tex-Mex border brushed-on flavor, be it the bilingual title cut, the techno-mariachi that is the Spanish-sung "Que Lastima," or the Dia de Los Muertos-inspired cover art. Also present and accounted for is the group's salacious sense of humor, which is readily apparent in the straightforward shuffle "Buck Nekkid" and equally rocked-out "Piece." Longtime fans of Memphis soul best known for their cover of Sam & Dave's "I Thank You," ZZ Top returns to the Stax/Volt canon for a crack at Lowell Fulsom's "Tramp," which is given a quirky reading thanks to the use of a filter on the vocals. Also tacked onto the last track is an uncredited cover of "As Time Goes By," sung by a gravelly sounding Billy Gibbons over slack-key-inspired guitar accompaniment.

The third major Erasure release in three years, 2007's ON THE ROAD TO NASHVILLE continues a remarkably prolific streak for the British synth-pop duo. This live DVD/CD set, recorded in Music City's landmark Ryman Auditorium, works as a companion piece to UNION STREET, and once again finds Vince Clarke and Andy Bell in an unlikely, but intriguing, acoustic setting. Highlights of the audio disc include the swooning "Boy," the shimmering "Tenderest Moments," and a beautifully spare version of the hit "A Little Respect," all of which shine the spotlight on Bell's emotive vocals. In addition to a documentary, the DVD also presents a number of bonus performances, making NASHVILLE essential for any devoted Erasure fan.
This set was recorded live from Erasure's Union Street Acoustic Tour on May 2, 2006 in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium. The set features never before seen audio and video of reworked hits and live favorites. The DVD features the visuals of this concert, along with 4 bonus songs, as well as the short film The Road to Union Street directed by Rich Schlankser and Michael Slavens.

Parks' interest in Trinidadian steel-drum bands was given full flower (he also produced an album by the Esso Trinidad Steel Band around this same time), and their color serves as a joyful counterpoint to string sections and small combos of guitars, bass, drums, piano and horns. It says a good deal about Parks' skills as an arranger, producer and singer that Lowell George's "Sailin' Shoes" sounds right at home on an album with Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."
