The Italian singer has been a superstar in Europe since the mid-1980s, with his romantic rock songs forming the basis for adventurous musical explorations into Latin rhythms and country music. He solidifies his popularity in the Americas with his tenth studio album, CALMA APPARENTE, an immaculately realized collection of Latin-flavored ballads and more uptempo numbers that frame his soulful vocals with a nuanced, imaginative production.

Calma Aparente CD music
$13.49 Transparente is Mariza's "big" album, it seems, the one designed to make her more than just the shining star of the new fado. The music connects the dots between Portugal and Brazil, giving an international quality to it all. Her voice is as crystal clear as ever, and production by Jacques Morelenbaum is wonderfully transparent. Yet there's a sheen to it all that seems intended to rub off any rough edges. You can hear it in the soft strings that cushion "Meu Fado Meu." It just seems to be trying too hard, rather than letting the music unfold. It's apparent, too, in the fact that the songs are all short -- the longest barely passes three-and-a-half minutes. Not that it's not a gorgeous album; it enfolds the ears like silk; Mariza herself has never sounded more seductive, and the cello on "Quando Me Sinto So" is as warm and inviting as a lover's kiss. But unlike her previous work, there seems an air of calculation about all this, the sense of deliberately seeking out a larger audience rather than allowing the music to speak for itself. She'll never sing a bad note, and there's absolutely nothing to fault ...
| | Pell Mell 1982: It Was A Live Cassette CD (2001)
Calma Aparente music CDs
$11.85 And so indeed it was -- eight songs recorded at a 1982 Portland show, initially self-released and then re-released almost two decades later on CD. The band already had an EP and a couple of compilation appearances under their collective belt by the time of this particular show, and as a snapshot of a young group exploring sounds both fashionable and waiting to be rediscovered, it's an enjoyable listen indeed. The major difference between this release and nearly everything that followed was the absence of Steve Fisk -- though he mixed and produced the release, ...

| | Infinite Livez Bush Meat CD (2004)
Calma Aparente album
$12.85 Rapper Infinite Livez was, during his previous life, an art student and comic-book artist named Steven Henry. Those beginnings fully inform Bush Meat, his full-length debut for Big Dada, one of the prime sources for British rap (New Flesh, Roots Manuva) in the new millennium. Obsessed with fluids on a level that rivals the Piss Christ and flaunting his vision of comical, cartoonish soap opera, Infinite certainly doesn't bore with his rhymes. "The Adventures of Lactating Man" and "White Wee Wee" lead the way, the first presenting an unlikely case study ("I know it sounds filthy, but I get all milky/whenever my baby's squeezing ...

In 1995 JACKIE TICE saw herself in a battered raven soaring over South Mountain. ''I was going through a divorce at the time and I felt like that bird,'' says the Center Valley guitarist, singer, songwriter and single mother of two musical teens. ''I was tattered and torn, but I was still flying.'' Tice turned her epiphany into the song "BLACKBIRD." Poignant and uplifting, it helped her win the emerging-songwriters award at the 1996 Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival. It's the most downloaded ...
