The material is deep-roots folk with a strong Cajun flavor, and with top session players like mandolinist Sam Bush on board, the execution and playing is never less than flawless. Yet the arrangements and approach transcend any sort of genre exercise: Ronstadt and Savoy sing as though they are spirits resting between the past and the future, giving this mixture of originals, covers, and traditional songs a beautiful, timeless quality.
By the early 2000s Linda Ronstadt was galaxies away from the '70s soft rock on which she made her name. On a journey that led her deeper and deeper into American roots music she began working with traditional Cajun artist Ann Savoy (of the Savoy-Doucet Cajun Band), and the results of the collaboration can be found on 2006's graceful and beautifully measured ADIEU, FALSE HEART.
Personnel include: Linda Ronstadt; Ann Savoy; Joel Savoy (acoustic guitar, fiddle); Sam Broussard, Chas Justus (acoustic guitar); Sam Bush (mandolin); Andrea Zonn (violin); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); Krista Wilkinson (viola); Kristin Wilkinson (strings); Dirk Powell (harmonica, accordion, bass guitar); Byron House (upright bass).
Uncut (p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "A palpable sense of discovery and reinvention runs through ADIEU FALSE HEART." No Depression (pp.128-129) - "The singing is superb: Linda Ronstadt remains one of pop's most lucent vocalists, while Ann Savoy proves a remarkable soloist and duet partner." Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "It's a generally low-key affair, mainly strung around gentle ballads, the twosome shaping harmonies and taking turns at leads..." Linda Ronstadt Adieu False Heart Songs Adieu False Heart Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Disappointing I love Linda Ronstadt, but even she could not save this one. The voices are great but the selection of songs are blah, especially the "french" ones. Submitted by rjmullen (Godfrey, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
A match made in Bayou Heaven It amazes me how well Linda Ronstadt can traverse so many different genres and with such amazing clarity of sound and vision. She is the ultimate sound chameleon, and Ann Savoy is an equal partner. Submitted by vincent.daforno (Cambridge, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Beautiful Music This wonderful music will not be heard by many but the beautiful harmony of these two voices is outstanding. Hopefully word of mouth will be this music to be heard by the masses. Submitted by bayvito (NY NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Ronstadt returns to the great sounds of her early albums! Ms. Ronstadt has made a return to the soulful ballads that first endeared us to her music. The supporting cast is marvelous and the contributions by dulcimer musician David Schnaufer is simply superb.
If you loved the late 70's, early 80's albums that Linda Ronstadt released, then this CD is a must for your collection. Submitted by uwant12 (Greenwood, IN, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Another Musical Offering By Linda...We Are Blessed!!! As a musician and music educator, I've been a LR fan for years. This album continues to solidify my admiration for the wide range of her talent in putting together this album of Cajun/Creole/bluegrass music. Ann Savoy's and Linda's voices blend together exquisitely throughout the album and the other musicians offer up very tasty morsels of folk flavored craftsmanship. This album will stay near the top of my favorite eclectic and esoteric cd collection with Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Nils Lofgren, Sting, David Bromberg, Shawn Colvin, Stevie Ray V., Robert Shaw Chorale, Glenn Gould, Andrea Bocelli, et al.
