One Love One World album
$12.15 Recorded between 1969 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna & Dana Smart.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (1999, MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
Not a career-spanning overview, as opening number "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" dates from 1969, seven years into Jimmy Cliff's career, but this is an excellent trawl through his past nonetheless. Ultimate Collection should really have kicked off with "Waterfall," his first international hit (number one in Brazil), but "World" brought him success in the both in the U.K. and U.S., and apparently that's all that counts. Nevertheless, the set follows the reggae star down the years, through hit singles and across crucial album tracks, and bringing it all bang up to date with "Rise Up," a number from Cliff's 1999 Humanitarian album. However, there's one yawning gap -- 1982 to 1988, when Cliff was signed to the Columbia label. Half this collection is given over ...

| | Bob Marley Catch A Fire: Deluxe Edition CDs (1973) Remastered; Deluxe Edition
One Love One World music CDs
$19.59 It is nearly impossible to imagine a time when reggae was not part of the cultural currency. Though Bob Marley and the Wailers cannot be said to have invented the style, they certainly brought it to the world stage, and this album was the torch that lit the way. CATCH A FIRE hit with the force of a revelation when it was released in 1973, and though Chris Blackwell tailored its sound with a rock audience in mind, the album was still unlike anything that had ever come down the pike. Ironically, even given its relatively full production and electric guitar solos, CATCH A FIRE sounds more organic and rootsy than any of the Wailers' subsequent releases.
While the percolating rhythms and burbling bass lines of the Barrett brothers, and the sweet, impeccable harmonies of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer soothe and move, CATCH A FIRE also introduces the conscious, politically minded themes that would remain at the center of Marley's songwriting for the rest of his career. "Concrete Jungle," one of the towering standout tracks, addresses the trap of inner cities, while "Slave Driver" ...
| | Culture International Herb CD (1979) Import
One Love One World songs
$10.19 African-American R&B has affected different reggae artists in different ways. While Toots and the Maytals' gritty ska/reggae is comparable to the raw, tough southern soul that Wilson Picket, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding were known for, Culture's sweet, mellifluous style of reggae is closer to the northern soul and sweet soul that came out of Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit in the '60s and '70s. On International Herb, ones hears a lot of northern soul influence, as well as Afro-Caribbean ...
| | Paul Kossoff Kossoff/Kirke/Tetsu/Rabbit CD (2007)
One Love One World album
$13.09 Unsurprisingly, this quartet sounds uncannily like Free and its English descendant Bad Company. Drummer Simon Kirke was in both bands. Guitarist Paul Kossoff, bassist Tetsu Yamauchi, and keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick were in Free, although the latter two appeared only in the band's ragged, final days. The problem ...
| | Duane Stephenson From August Town CD (2007)
One Love One World CD music
$7.79 The violent and senseless death of South African reggae star Lucky Dubé in late 2007 was not only a horrible tragedy for his family and friends; it also left a hole in the reggae firmament where once there had been a soaringly beautiful voice with a perfect (if rather repetitious) sense of pop hooks. Duane Stephenson doesn't fill that hole perfectly, nor would listeners want him to, but his singing does provide some of the same cathartic rush that Dubé's did, and on his solo debut (his first album since leaving his post as lead singer ...

| | Gladys Knight Live At The Roxy CD (1998)
One Love One World songs
$6.05 Unaccountably ignored when it was finally released, this is actually a first-rate account of the later history of Gladys Knight & the Pips. Dating from a good half-decade past their chart heyday, Live at the Roxy captures the quartet in a spirited if somewhat slick mode -- "Grateful" opens the show (after an intro of the Charlie Chaplin co-authored standard "Smile") on a smooth pop/soul note, but when they slide into "Taste of Bitter Love" you know why audiences were ...
