One Love One World album
$8.65 In the 1980s, Eek-A-Mouse (a quirky, eccentric toaster/singer) made significant contributions to dubwise, which evolved into the more abrasive dancehall style associated with Shabba Ranks, Nardo Ranks and Lt. Stitchie. Essentially, toasters like Mouse are reggae's equivalent of rappers, although dub was around long before hip-hop emerged in the late '70s. U-Neek finds the distinctive Mouse incorporating hip-hop touches here and there without becoming as forceful as the dancehall ...

| | Catch 22 Permanent Revolution CD (2006)
One Love One World music CDs
$10.09 Break out the checkered suspenders and dust off those old history books -- you're gonna need 'em both. Ready or not, New Jersey's Catch 22 has arrived with their academic soiree, Permanent Revolution. It's a concept album that ambitiously follows the life of Leon Trotsky, Bolshevik revolutionary and father of Marxist theory. (Who knew these ska-punks were also scholars?) After the band was forced to find new singers following both Keasbey Nights and Alone in a Crowd, Permanent Revolution is the second proper effort with saxophonist Ryan Eldred and trumpeter Kevin Gunther trading off on vocals. And coming off the lukewarm and mixed response to Dinosaur Sounds, this album should find fans more pleasantly greeted than the unsteady rock that dominated that 2003 record. Even with a lyrical theme that finds the band stretching itself a bit thin with straightforward insight ("Stay true to principle and give your all for all!"), the music stands firm. And this is a good thing, since really, while a Russian history lesson is a noble task, its still seems a little awkward revved up to the tune of the third wave. The soundtrack ...
| | Bob Marley Songs Of Freedom CDs (1992) Box Set
One Love One World songs
$38.49 Includes liner notes by Rob Partridge, Rita Marley, Derrick Morgan, John "Rabbit" Bundrick and Timothy White.
During his all-too brief life, Bob Marley established himself as one of the giants of modern music; he stands on par with the likes of Miles Davis and Bob Dylan, performers who took established musical forms and revolutionized them, who continually evolved their vision throughout their careers. From his first single, the bouncy "Judge Not," through a loose, live rendition of the haunting "Redemption Song" performed at his last stage appearance, SONGS OF FREEDOM documents Bob Marley's musical legacy better than any previous compilation, and probably, better than any likely to come.
Marley was at his peak at the time of his death in 1981, meaning there is no filler or weak material here, only four solid discs of great songs. His philosophical evolution is easily seen: listen to a rude-boy anthem, like the ...

| | Gladys Knight Live At The Roxy CD (1998)
One Love One World songs
$6.05 Unaccountably ignored when it was finally released, this is actually a first-rate account of the later history of Gladys Knight & the Pips. Dating from a good half-decade past their chart heyday, Live at the Roxy captures the quartet in a spirited if somewhat slick mode -- "Grateful" opens the show (after an intro of the Charlie Chaplin co-authored standard "Smile") on a smooth pop/soul note, but when they slide into "Taste of Bitter Love" you know why audiences were still packing to see them in 1980, and why you're buying this CD. The soulful vocal acrobatics, the soaring harmonies, and the energy spikes can fill a room even off the CD, ...
