Whitey Johnson was the first guitar player I ever saw that amazed me, and I always go back to that parking lot in Garland, Texas when someone asks what made me want to play. It was Labor Day 1963 with the new asphalt oozing a black goo that ... Full Descriptionwould rob your flip flops if you didn't keep moving. My baseball buddies and me were hot footin' all around the shopping center carnival, rocking the Tilt-a-Whirl and the bumper cars and ruling the Fun House. Leon Phelps was my ride to the fair. His dad played mandolin in a bluegrass band called The Breakdown Boys, they were all mechanics, that played before the Valiants, who mostly covered Elvis and Jerry Lee, Little Richard and Fats Domino. The Valiants had the perfect look for a combo of their day, powder blue shirts, white dickies, tight black slacks, pointed toe white loafers, and razor-cut pompadours standing tall. Their outfits were complimented with matching white Fender Telecaster, Stratocaster, and Precision Bass with beige Fender amps. They were smoking and laughing at each other's dirty jokes the whole time The Breakdown Boys played their set of crippled up Flatt and Scruggs and Bill Monroe stuff. Leon and I tried to look cool and act like rockers, like we didn't like his dad's band, even lighting up behind the flat-bed truck that was the stage while his dad was busy workin' the mandolin and couldn't see us. for more, check out www.whiteyjohnson.com! NO ROOM FOR SQUARES is one of the more inventive titles in the Blue Note catalog. This is certainly an apt description for a session that includes the very hip Mobley and accompaniment from the swinging Lee Morgan, creative piano master Andrew Hill, sturdy ...
| | Frank French Buon Ritmo Sempre Marcato CD (2000)
Whitey Johnson album
$22.49 How does one categorize a musician immersed in European Classical traditions from the time of Bach to the 20th Century, but also intensely responsive to the music of New Orleans, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Brazil?Frank French answers the riddle by synthesizing all these various styles into his own formulation as a pianist and composer. Although it might seem obvious that anyone born to the Rhythm and Blues of the 1950's, growing up in San Francisco and studying the Classics at the Conservatory of Music would likely enough emerge with such an artistic makeup, it is not as though there are no other historical parallels or models for this kind of musical life.In earlier times the great American musical pioneer, Louis Moreau Gottschalk successfully connected the musical traditions of Europe and Africa in his most important piano compositions dating from the 1850s. It was no accident that Frank French discovered a musical affinity for Gottschalk and became a premiere interpreter of his music. In his unique one-man presentation of Gottschalk's life and music, French weaves musical selections in with the composer's diary to paint a vivid picture in historical context. With Gottschalk, begins this saga of music making, composing and identifying continuing tradition and legacy that is truly Pan-American in it's scope and outlook. The use of the pianoforte in the way espoused by French implies a distinctive musical territory placing the sound of the Western Hemisphere ...

$14.79 Singer and guitarist BOB REID has always known that he wanted to sing the blues. As a first grader he entertained his classmates in Madison, Georgia by singing Jimmy Reed songs. Later, Reid did what seems like the modern soul singer’s obligatory stint in the church choir, but it would be many years before his attention would return to the blues. There were a few other things Reid had to do first.Turning his attention to television, Reid enjoyed a groundbreaking career as a broadcast journalist, producer and executive. As a producer, Reid has covered everything from politics to riots. He also managed network news bureaus for NBC, CBS and Fox News. He has interviewed celebrities ranging from Frank Sinatra to Etta James as a director for Entertainment Tonight.Reid and Berenzy made their collaborative stage debut on January 17, 2000, to a sellout crowd at New York’s famous Blue Note Jazz Club. The quartet featured Charlie Buckland on electric bass and Jim Mussen on drums. Donna Kelly later joined the group on drums.JOHN BERENZY, a self-taught musician, was born in New York City, where he still resides. After hearing early rhythm and blues on a jukebox in San Antonio, John decided to become a musician. ...
