Whitey Johnson music CDs
$16.09 Also available in a 3-pack with JOHNNY WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE.
Johnny Winter's second album for Columbia--duh--1970's SECOND WINTER is also notorious for a gimmicky sales device. When the recording sessions were over, Winter had enough material for an album and a half; rather than add a side of filler, Columbia simply promoted the album as the world's first three-sided album. (In a snarky review, Rolling Stone sarcastically gave the blank fourth side an in-depth discussion.)
The last of Winter's albums to feature his original backing band--drummer Uncle John Turner, bassist Tommy Shannon, and brother Edgar on keyboards and saxes--SECOND WINTER is a refinement of the blues-rock aesthetic of 1969's JOHNNY WINTER. Louder, harder, faster, and more reckless, this is to JOHNNY WINTER as Elvis Costello's THIS YEAR'S MODEL is to MY AIM IS TRUE: an album so phenomenal that it makes the debut, excellent though it is, sound weak in comparison. Highlights include the punky "I Hate Everybody" and a brilliant Hendrix-style deconstruction ...
| | Kenny Wayne Shepherd Trouble Is... CD (1997)
Whitey Johnson songs
$11.55 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
"Trouble Is..." was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
After releasing a debut that drew raves from people such as James Brown and B.B. King, Kenny Wayne Shepherd followed it up with an album that demonstrates how much musical growth this childhood prodigy has experienced in two years. On TROUBLE IS..., Shepherd's playing still reflects the huge influence of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan (particularly on the instrumental title track that finds him joined by Double Trouble and Reese Winans), but new singer Noah Hurt also colors everything with a growl reminiscent of Paul Rodgers.
Moving slightly away from the country-blues of LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, Shepherd's strong rhythmic touch shines on everything from juke-joint exercises ("[Long] Gone" with James Cotton) to the transformation of Dylan's "Everything's Broken" into a roadhouse rave-up. Although this Shreveport native's guitar lends itself to more up-tempo material (check out "Chase The Rainbow"), slower songs are where the 20-year old digs deep into the heart of the blues. The pure emotion found in "Blue On Black" and "I Found Love (When I Found You)" shows that Shepherd can carry on the legacy of the blues for many years to come.

| | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
Whitey Johnson CD music
$9.95 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision and abandon, creating the perfect canvas for Wells's sly, sexy frontman antics. Unlike a lot of his contemporaries, Wells was not afraid to incorporate the influence of R&B and rock & roll ("Snatch It Back and Hold It"), and his music has an accessible ...

| | Hank Mobley No Room For Squares CD (1963) Remastered
Whitey Johnson songs
$9.65 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of NO ROOM FOR SQUARES contains two tracks, "Up A Step" and "Old World, New Imports" that were recorded at an earlier session but appeared on the original LP. The tracks "Syrup And Biscuits" and "Comin' Back" that appeared on the first CD release of this album are omitted from this edition.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (2000, Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey).
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
NO ROOM FOR SQUARES is one of the more inventive titles in the Blue Note catalog. This is certainly an apt description for a session that includes the very hip Mobley and accompaniment from the swinging Lee Morgan, creative piano master Andrew Hill, sturdy bassist John Ore, and the powerful Philly Joe Jones on drums. Mobley's confident tenor wail is in full force here, as he and Morgan blow through the all-original program with strong support from the daring rhythm section. SQUARES is among Mobley's most raucous sessions. This is evident on energized tracks like the opening title track and the Latin-tinged "Three Way Split." Also featured is Morgan's lush ballad "Carolyn." In all, this is another stunning hard bop classic.
