Heart On A String
$14.09 Audio Mixer: Randy Staub . When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low. To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains. While new singer William DuVall was not ...

Personnel: Jeff Tweedy, Rufus Wainwright, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen (vocals); John Leventhal (guitar, dobro, mandolin, harmonica, harmonium, organ, Wurlitzer organ, drums, percussion); RIck DePofi (bass clarinet, horns, piano); Zev Katz, Tim Luntzel (upright bass); Joe Bonadio, Shawn Pelton (drums); Curtis King (background vocals). Audio Mixers: John Leventhal; RIck DePofi. Photographer: Deborah Feingold. Arrangers: John Leventhal; Rosanne Cash. After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's ...

Heart On A String
$9.35 Flashback to the year 2000: Dave Streets is achieving local success in the L.A. music scene, garnering recognition as a superior songwriter, and playing at legendary venues like The Roxy, The Coconut Teazer, and Highland Grounds. But Dave starts to feel that his rock sound, influenced by and reminiscent of The Beatles, U2, The Rolling Stones, and The Who, might fit better outside of Los Angeles - perhaps back in his college town in the Midwest. So he packs up his axe and heads off to Chicago. Flash to March 2001: The advertising agency is abuzz with the latest antics on "Temptation Island," and Dave and co-worker Dan Puccini are pounding out beats on each other's cubicle walls. After several weeks of practice in Dave's apartment, the acoustic duo spends the summer performing in many of Chicago's most popular neighborhood bars and pubs. Though drunken sing-alongs are fun and lucrative, the pair decides that it's time to play all-out, full-band original rock music. Flash to January 2002: Dan's chance run-in with an old friend from Notre Dame, John Tabis, leads to the addition of the band's front man. The rest of that winter finds the trio, now known as The Stone Puppet, crammed into a tiny apartment. With acoustic guitars in hand, the musicians write new rock tunes and re-write old ones. These three 'regular guys' spend countless hours rehearsing and fine-tuning... Flash to May 2002: With the addition of bassist Tom Hayes and drummer Jon Adler, the band now consists of five members, playing high-energy, original rock music that focuses on creative songwriting with memorable melodies, sweet harmonies, and catchy hooks. The band plays regularly at some of Chicago's best-known venues throughout 2002. Children of the '70s and '80s with a love of classic pop/rock, the band's musical influences range from modern rock and punk to old school rock 'n roll and jazz. The unique blend of the band members' eclectic personalities and musical tastes results in a smooth, radio-friendly sound that The Stone Puppet can truly call their own. The band strives for variety from one song to the next, playing pure driving rock, danceable pop, and stirring ballads. The Stone Puppet quickly develops its own character - unique and modern, but still reminiscent of classic rock bands of the past - that leaves audiences with a sound they can easily recognize. The band releases its debut EP in early 2003, created with the idea of giving their quickly growing fan-base something to take home with them. The Puppet hopes that fans singing along at shows is a sign that this demo is only the start of their success. Flash to June 2003: Solid ...

Heart On A String
$11.39 ___Orange County Music Awards "Best Indie Rock Band" of 20059 Ball, "Upside Down" - One of Orange County's best rock trios has teamed up with producer Joe Ongie to record one of the finest local releases of the year. Singer-guitarist Tim Nienhuis, drummer Danny Gamboa and bassist-singer Dev Torres released a strong demo EP last year, but the newly released, nine-song "Upside Down" displays the full range of 9 Ball's artistry."Upside Down" features beautiful ballads ("How Do You Dream," "Oxygen"), infectious power-pop (the instantly memorable "Gray" and "Love Find You") and propulsive rockers ("Until Forever") that paint a sonic picture of a group as concerned with their song craft as their chops. "Hard Pressed" is the best Toad the Wet Sprocket song that Glen Phillips never wrote, and Fountain Valley-based 9 Ball could well be a kindred spirit of that Santa Barbara outfit with its formidable mix of rock, pop, folk and alternative styles anchored by thoughtful ...
