Trefler album
$15.65 First issued in the early 1960s, this collection of musical Christmas cheer is packed full of the smoothly sung, sentimental favorites associated as much with Nat "King" Cole himself as with the season. The singer's performance of "The Christmas Song" is an unforgettable classic reprised here twice, once in an updated version that includes a contemporary vocal from his daughter, Natalie, and also in Cole's original 1946 recording. Other traditional religious favorites like "I Saw Three Ships" and ...
| | Michael Buble CDs (2003) Enhanced CD
Trefler CD music
$9.89 Bob Sheppard, Dave Boroff (saxophone); Gary Grant (trumpet); Randy Waldman (piano, keyboards); Brian Bromberg (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Tull, Frank Capp, Joe Labarbera (drums); Raffael Padilla (percussion); Jochem Van Der Saag, Neil Devor, Felipe Elgueta (programming); Barry Gibb (background vocals).
Right off the bat, Michael Buble has you in his corner just because you know people have been calling the poor guy "Bubble" all his life (keep that accent on the second syllable, folks). Nomenclature aside, Buble's debut album positions him as something of a Harry Connick, Jr. for the 21st century. His husky croon gives him a bearing beyond his tender years, and in fact his Sinatra-phrased, pop-jazz style bears strong echoes of Connick's singing. Accordingly, the production leans heavily on the updated swing of chestnuts like "Fever" and "Come Fly With Me," but that's only part of the story.
As a modern song stylist, Buble digs into the standards of a more contemporary songbook as well. George Michael's jazzy ballad "Kissing a Ballad" has been a standard-in-waiting for some time, and a version of the Bee Gees' soulful ballad "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" features a guest turn by Barry Gibb himself. And there are worse things that could happen to Stevie Wonder's "For Once in My Life" than to be given the big-band treatment. It's refreshing to hear the debut of a young singer who's simply applying a strong voice and style to quality songs instead of cynically treading the teen-pop treadmill.

| | Meco Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk CD (1977)
Trefler album
$6.49 Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California).
As a purist, Meco's Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk should be heard on its original vinyl, even if that means losing the two bonus tracks on the Hip-O CD, the "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band (7" Radio Edit)" and the "Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band (12" Disco Mix)." This is not the music most people would listen to every day, so why not enjoy the experience. The LP's cover is large, and the two space travelers bumping bottoms is hilarious cheese. Musically, the LP and the CD are identical (with the exception of the bonus material). An interesting trivia bit is that John Williams supposedly did not know anything about disco when he returned from London. When he was asked to listen to Meco's version of his now famous recording, Williams was apprehensive. But, in the end, he credited Meco with helping bring symphonic music further into the mainstream. This important genre-busting album is most enjoyable in its original form. The "Title Theme" was a number one hit in 1977. Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk makes one of the best kids albums out there. ~ JT Griffith

| | Carpenters Yesterday Once More CDs (1998) Remastered
Trefler CD music
$27.05 The first of many CD compilations of Karen and Richard Carpenter's dozens of hit singles, 1985's YESTERDAY ONCE MORE contains 28 of the siblings' best songs--from their first hit, 1969's "Ticket To Ride," to their last, 1981's "Touch Me When We're Dancing." The two-CD set eschews chronological order, sequencing the songs by mood instead. As such, it's probably the most listenable of the Carpenters' compilations, serving both as a perfect introduction to the duo's best work and as a handy sampler for longtime fans. The set was remastered by Richard Carpenter in 1998 as part of a general overhaul of the Carpenters' A&M catalogue.
Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered two CD compilation from the '70s Soft Rock hitmakers with different artwork than the long-deleted U.S. version. From the late '60s to the early '80s, nobody created music as lush and beautiful as The Carpenters. They were in a class by themselves with Karen's haunting and lovely voice and Richard's expert arrangements. Unlike most of their compilations, Yesterday Once More creates different moods by featuring the tracks in non-chronological order. Disc One mixes Soft Pop and Soft Rock ('Superstar', 'I Won't Last A Day Without You' and their excellent cover of Klaatu's 'Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft') while Disc Two features a more mellow, ballad heavy mixture of audio wonder ('We've Only Just Begun', 'This Masquerade' and the all-time classic '(They Long To Be) ...
