| | Hall & Oates Do What You Want Be What You Are: The Music of Daryl Hall John Oates CDs (2009)
Knee Deep
$38.65 It's telling that DO WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHAT YOU ARE, Sony/Legacy's comprehensive, career-spanning Daryl Hall and John Oates box set, takes its title from a moderately successful mid-'70s single from the duo, written and recorded just as the group was hitting their creative stride. The slow Philly groove of "Do What You Want Be Who You Are" may have hearkened back to the duo's soul roots, side-stepping some of the outré pop experiments they had done just two years earlier on War Babies, but Hall & Oates took the title's sentiment to heart, blurring boundaries between rock, pop, and soul in a way that wasn't always easy to appreciate at the peak of their popularity in the '80s. During that decade, Hall & Oates were omnipresent, seemingly dominating every radio format and MTV, ...

| | Bluegrass Allstars: Sixteen Grand Slams From Sugar Hill Records CD (2004)
Knee Deep
$14.79 Good compilations are a lot like a radio program without commercials. They allow the listener to enjoy quality music for 50 or 60 minutes without commercial interruptions and station breaks. Compilations also give labels like Sugar Hill a chance to show off their cadre of artists and introduce -- to anyone who's been living in a cave the last few years -- just what they have to offer. Bluegrass All Stars smartly decides to concentrate on one of the label's specialties: that backwoods genre of mountain music introduced by Bill Monroe and his band over 50 years ago. The collection is nicely balanced between traditional and contemporary styles, featuring artists from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Alan Bibey to Sam Bush and the Seldom Scene. The sparkling "Smoothie Song" by Nickel Creek kicks off the collection, and it's one of most ...

| | D cap What Cha Know About... CD (2002)
Knee Deep
$15.19 BIO.GRAPHY. From being introduced to rap at a young age of three years old, and becoming the opening act for big Ticket Master artists like; B2K and Jadakiss from the L.O.X.. The 18 year old, North Carolina native is demanding to get his feet wet in the music industry and slide down the path of success. D.Cap who's real name is Du'Quan Jones was born in Southern Pines, North Carolina, but raised in Winston-Salem. His father was very close friends with Jam Master Jam (RunDMC's DJ), and whenever they would come in town for a gig, he brought d.Cap alone for the experience. Never in a million years did he think his son would want to be a rapper. D.Cap quoted "I remember when he first found out I could rap, let alone write, he was so happy. All that week he was like yo we need to get you into the studio, so I can have something to let Run and them listen to."However, that never happened and d.Cap didn't really pursue rap as potential career, because of the lack of studios to go to. But, while working at the Library, d.Cap explains the strangest thing happened. "A guy who worked with me over heard me battling another emcee, Needless to say I killed him. He was so impressed by what I was saying and by the fact I could actually rap, that he basically put me down with a partner of his that owned a studio for the FREE."That following summer, d.Cap basically stayed all day, everyday in the studio recording. But, the further they got into the album, the more his connection with Carlos (producer/owner of the studio) got worst. To ...

Knee Deep
$10.29 The debut EP from Hiss and Chambers, a Portland-based quartet combining anthemic rock and dark retro dance stylings. F.I.Y.L: Echo & the Bunnymen, Block Party, the Cure, Interpol,Joy Division, The Editors, Bauhaus, New Order, U2.Featuring singer/guitars Shawn Saindon (Vacationland/Thruthewires), Drummer Ryan Dolan (Sheila Divine/Lincolnville), Mike Hamlin (Peepshow/Vespertine) on guitar and bassist Jasper Rice. In February of 2006, Dolan, Shawn Saindon (guitar, vocal), Jasper Rice (bass, vocal) and Mike Hamlin (guitar) convened to form a new musical relationship. In a room barely larger than a broom closet, the four set to work carving out an identity partly inspired by some home demos Saindon had collected since his departure from Portland rockers Vacationland. Moody but danceable; rock but not vapid, goth but pop. The challenge the Hiss faced and beat in their formation was the balancing what is pure fun and what is artistically important and viable. The sweet spot somewhere in the middle of that conversation is where they landed. Saindon says “We consider ourselves a dance band full of musicians who have never been in a dance band before. The way the Cure or Block Party are a dance bands, I guess. It’s been great to watch the first rows of the audience move to the beat.”Dolan continues, “So we’ve been going at this whole thing with a bit of naivety of the genre, which I think forces what’s coming out the other side to be genuine, or at least an honest vision. Anyway, we were just so tired of audience members staring up into the singer’s nose or at the guitarist’s left hand.”In February of 2007, the band went into Halo Recording Studio with lauded producer and engineer, Jonathan Wyman to record the debut EP Making Eyes featuring ...
