Considered by many of Todd Rundgren's old-school fans to be his last truly "great" album--though the ones that follow have more than their share of goodies for the attentive listener--1978's HERMIT OF MINK HOLLOW does contain some of his last ... Full Descriptionpure pop tunes in the vein of such previous hits as "I Saw the Light." The heartbreaking "Can We Still Be Friends" was his last Top-40 hit. Besides that gem, the album contains some of his most wide-ranging material, from the silly, sound-effects-laden but utterly delightful "Onomatopoeia" to the dark, foreboding "Bag Lady," which includes a then-current reference to New York's notorious Son of Sam serial killer that provoked small controversy. Elsewhere, the hard-charging "You Cried Wolf" is one of his most effective rockers. While not as perfect as SOMETHING/ANYTHING? or as peculiar as A WIZARD, A TRUE STAR, HERMIT OF MINK HOLLOW is one of Todd Rundgren's best pop albums.

Today the most recognition the Animals get is "House of the Rising Sun" being played on oldies radio, but in the mid-1960s they were a powerful part of the British Invasion, often reckoned on a par with the Beatles, the Stones, and the Who. Like those bands, the Animals had strong roots in blues and R&B, but, in their original incarnation, they stayed closer to those roots than their peers did. This definitive compilation, masterfully assembled by the ABKCO think tank of Teri Landi and Jody Klein, shows the tough, uncompromising use to which the Animals put their American influences. John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" is recast as a raw garage rocker glazed with Alan Price's sinister organ riffs, and the aforementioned "House of the Rising Sun" is transformed from a traditional folk lament to an urgent, ominous piece of churning tumult.

Conventional wisdom concerning Marc Bolan is that TANX was the beginning of the end, but the two-disc 2002 reissue of the album goes a long way toward rectifying that false impression. TANX certainly tweaks the T. Rex formula, bringing Flo and Eddie's harmonies forward in the mix and adding horns and more keyboards. The songwriting is more varied as well, with ballads like "Broken Hearted Blues" and soulful rockers like "Mad Donna" amid the usual glam boogie. Though this 1971 release was issued at a time of enormous commercial success for the Moody Blues, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR contains some of the band's most adventurous music. The band had recently discovered the Moog synthesizer, and its presence is felt on much of the album. The opening "Procession" instantly sets this collection's experimental course, landing like a spacecraft among reams of cascading synthesizer before evolving into a soundscape of cricket chirps, thunderclaps, and tribal chanting. The next three minutes contain one of the most cathartic sonic explorations the band has ever put forth.
Other standout tracks include "After You Came," which features tessellated vocal layering and bluesy guitar work; "Emily," a song that John Lodge wrote for his daughter; and the rapturously symphonic "You Can Never Go Home." Rich, complex, powerful, and beautifully produced, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR brings together all of the Moody Blues' best qualities in one album, standing as the culmination of their fine '60s work, and the standard-bearer for the music to come.

Back in the seventies, it seemed that every rock band needed to have a live concert film to commemorate their triumphant treks across America. Led Zeppelin were no exception and THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME is a chronicle of Led Zeppelin on tour. Although the uninspired visual aspects of the film fail to capture the power of Led Zeppelin at their mid-seventies peak, the album manages to convey their live prowess. The twenty-six minute, hypnotic version of "Dazed and Confused" works much better here than in the film, where movie patrons would head to the concession stand ten minutes into the song. "Whole Lotta Love" gets a similar extended treatment and the results are equally impressive.
