Silversun Pickups: Brian Aubert, Nikki Monninger, Christopher Guanlao, Joe Lester. Audio Mixer: Tony Hoffer. Recording information: Beer Wine Fish, Echo Park, CA; Grand Master, Hollywood, CA; Sandbox, Hollywood, CA; Sound Factory, Hollywood, CA; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA. The Los Angeles band's debut full length blends pop smarts, propulsive, grungy rhythms, and the sensitive vocals of its singer Brian Aubert. Combining elements of Smashing Pumpkins and fey Britpop with a wide-eyed innocence, songs like "Little Lover's So Polite" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles" exude an infectious, joyous energy that propels their hooks and choruses into the subconscious. Carnavas, the debut full-length from L.A.'s Silversun Pickups, is the sort of record that brings something new to discover with each listen. Thus, listen one is as enjoyable as listen five or ten, but probably for entirely different reasons, since unique bits continuously appear from the band's dream haze of accessibly textured indie rock. From the grainy opening of "Melatonin" that blends into strikingly harmonized male/female vocals, the quartet immediately showcases their innate sense of melody amid textured atmospherics and layers of distortion and fuzz, which all come across as both bittersweet and enchanting. Silversun Pickups take the shimmering dream pop of My Bloody Valentine and filter it through '90s grunge instincts like that of the Smashing Pumpkins -- and it all combines to produce an album that, well, is really freaking good. Vocals are both haunting and sweet, as lead singer Brian Aubert somehow manages to sound like a cross between the Goo Goo Dolls' Robby Takac and the Get Up Kids' Matt Pryor -- in a good way. And for every moment of ominous intensity, the band further manipulates their ethereal antics into moments of pure shimmering redemption. "Future Foe Scenarios" is urgent in a completely controlled way that makes the vocals come off even fiercer over the song's driving distortion, while exhilarating and spacious cuts like "Lazy Eye" and "Common Reactor" materialize out of clouds of hazy guitars and pensive keyboard with dynamic force that never loses its direction. Though an extremely rewarding listen, proceed with caution: once put into a stereo, Carnavas may become stuck inside for quite a while. ~ Corey AparRolling Stone (p.94) - "[The band] show all that's possible when the California sun shines on indie-rock shoegazers....The Pickups' grandiose rock owes a great deal to its Chicago forebears..." Spin (p.85) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "By turns darkly fuzzy and brightly melodic, CARNAVAS is an auspicious record that manages to evoke a collaboration between Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine." Alternative Press (p.228) - "Always anchored with a friendly hook and sometimes even tender harmonies, CARNAVAS' dark/light tunes explode into a controlled chaos of distortion and white noise." Magnet (p.108) - "Aubert's vocals are paisley-print detachment one moment and howling catharsis the next, while his insistent pop strumming devolves into waves of guitar and keyboard noise." CMJ (p.5) - "This L.A. group takes the forlorn moods, sing-a-long choruses and stretched-out codas of current West Coast indie pop and takes them on a starship space ride." This band provides waves of sonic bliss not heard since the original ecstatic days of the shoegazers. A must have. Submitted by gvos (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Amazing Great album. Spectacular follow-up to Pikul. It hasn't left my CD player since it came out 4 weeks ago. Submitted by monty.m.mcalpine (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
shiny spacy pop to me it's. . .a bit of Garbage, Paramore, mix in a tad of Zwan(Billy Corgan's other band) and you get this. Great songs with a spacy pop feel. my faves are "Lazy Eye" and "Well Thought Out Twinkles". Enjoy it! Submitted by careyc (KC, MO USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A "Well Thought Out" Album Silversun Pickups are an amazingly talented Indie band whose songs reverberate with "Muse"-like bass lines and pulsating anthems. Songs such as "Lazy Eye" and "Future Foe Scenarios" deliver a rougher and slicing edge, while others like "Three Seed" and "Rusted Wheel" possess a mysterious and shimmering quality. Perhaps the weakest song on the album is the closer, "Common Reactor" as it ends with a bizarre chain-saw/grating sound for the last 30 seconds. However, the band provides quite a diverse heap of songs which just solidly illustrates their worthwhile attempt to bring meaningful and different music to the world. Keep watch for them for this is a band with something special. Submitted by Allison (Land of Music) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Guided By Voices Hold On Hope CD (2000) Limited Edition; Extended Play
Carnavas
$6.75 HOLD ON HOPE is a limited edition EP of 5000. Guided By Voices: Robert Pollard, Doug Gillard, Jim MacPherson, Greg Demos, Nate Farley, Tim Tobias. Producers include: Ric Ocasek. The Tigerbomb EP is six songs at 33 rpm (like the old early-'80s hardcore singles!). Again, Guided by Voices hit Refraze Studios to re-record and rethink two Alien Lanes tracks with better production. "My Valuable Hunting Knife" is much improved, restoring the more rocking, combative quality of the original version found on the live Crying Your Knife Away double LP, without changing the strange staccato, martial beat that the Alien Lanes version inserted. That wacka-beat is thickened though, and has more presence, and thus the big hook line of the verse once again shines through. The opposite is the case for the new look at "Game of Pricks" (along with "My Son Cool," that last LP's best track). Though still a great song, the flow of the lofty melody seems less natural in this arrangement; no point in tampering with perfection this time. But any new version is welcome. Of the four new songs, one more is recorded at Refraze: "Dodging Invisible Rays" shows that it's not the lo-fi approach that made this quintet great, it's the material and playing. This is one of those vaunted pop songs they seem to spit out like seeds from a watermelon, and truly benefits from the deeper stereophonic sound. The other three cuts return to the "I've got a silly idea, quick, let's record it at home" mode. "Mice Feel Nice (In My Room)" is another weird one in the vein of "Ex-Supermodel" (you know, the one with all the snoring on it), and "Not Good for the Mechanism" and "Kiss Only the Important Ones" are half-baked and never go anywhere but are both fun and funny anyway. In any case, the better-recorded tracks here make this 7" a strong addition to their ever-expanding catalog. ~ Jack Rabid Indie-rock superstars Guided by Voices could possible be the only band who could get away with releasing a nine-song EP. But as a CD single that provides a minor role in GBV's monstrous discography, Hold on Hope is more of a sampler and B-side compilation. With two tracks taken from their 1999 release of Do the Collapse as well as a handful of outtakes from that same session and a couple of preview songs from their follow-up album, Hold on Hope is more of a special gift ...

HARDCORE UFO'S BOX SET: REVELATIONS, EPIPHANIES, AND FAST FOOD IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE includes 5 CDs, bonus DVD, and an 80 page booklet. Guided By Voices includes: T. Sprout, P. Eric, R. Pollard, M. Mitchell. Recorded between 1984 & 2002. Those familiar with songwriter and lead singer Rob Pollard's quirky genius already know how inescapably catchy his tunes can be, how disorienting and delightful his shape-shifting persona, and how hard his band can rock. They also probably know how irrepressibly prolific he is, which is where this excellent six-disc box set--which collects only a sliver of GBV's monolithic vault of material--comes in. The discs are divided by function and/or source, with one offering up a 32-track greatest-hits sampler, another selecting b-sides and rarities, another delivering demos and outtakes (most of which were previously unreleased), another containing an in-concert performance, and yet another containing their first EP, FOREVER SINCE BREAKFAST. The final disc is a DVD with a documentary, videos, and live footage, among other treats. Those looking to dip a toe into the GBV ocean might want to start with a single-disc compilation (the hits disc from this set is sold separately), or one of their many excellent studio releases (BEE THOUSAND is a good portal), but ...
