Rich Man was originally released by Sire in 1972, four years before the Climax Blues Band broke through to the mainstream via their only radio hit, "Couldn't Get It Right." While this isn't the most memorable record in their discography, it is worth checking out for fans, as a lighter, pop-oriented approach is mixed with the hard blues-rock the band was known for at the time, especially on the Bo Diddley-like "Shake Your Love" and the Son House standard "Don't You Mind People Grinning in Your Face." ~ Al Campbell

| | Black Sabbath Mob Rules CD (1981) Import; Remastered
Rich Man CD music
$12.95 Black Sabbath had put itself back on track both musically and commercially with the 1980 album HEAVEN AND HELL, as the addition of new vocalist Ronnie James Dio was the shot in the arm Sabbath needed. A follow-up was released one year later, MOB RULES, which follows in the same mega-decibel approach as its predecessor. While it is still a vast improvement over Sabbath's final two albums with Ozzy Osbourne (1976's TECHNICAL ECSTASY and 1978's NEVER SAY DIE), it doesn't exactly match the inspired performances and top compositions featured on HEAVEN AND HELL.
The opening track, "Turn Up the Night," kicks off the album with a jolt of electricity, while other hard rocking highlights include the mid-paced "Voodoo" and the raging title track--the latter would be featured on the soundtrack to the cult animated movie, HEAVY METAL. Another ...
| | Doobie Brothers Minute By Minute CD (1978)
Rich Man music CDs
$18.05 The Doobie's biggest commercial success coincided with Michael McDonald's emergence as the leader of the band. His brilliant brand of sophisticated, keyboard-driven pop soul, as exemplified by the title track and the huge hit "What a Fool Believes," was instantly identifiable and almost impossible to resist. ...

$16.15 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite ...

| | Bob Margolin Down In The Alley CD (1993)
Rich Man music CDs
$15.39 On Down in the Alley, his first album for Alligator Records, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin doesn't quite follow though on the success of its predecessor Chicago Blues, yet that's only a relative scale. Margolin is one of a handful of musicians to keep classic Chicago blues alive in the '90s, both through covers and original material. His association with Muddy Waters is, if anything, overhyped by journalists and Alligator alike, but it has to be said that he does Muddy proud with down-and-dirty recordings like ...
| | Ride Carnival Of Light CD (1994)
Rich Man songs
$19.99 Original shoegazers Ride helped define the genre with their affected vocals and FX-heavy guitar swirl. CARNIVAL OF LIGHT is their 1994 album, which saw the group heading towards a more traditional rock-oriented sound.
Credit Ride for using only their own creative radar, completely ignoring all outside expectations for their third LP. Listeners could tell they had a love for the likes of the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, but admiring the Black Crowes was practically out of the question for the scene that birthed them. Even Crowes producer George Drakoulias was called in to produce, but John Leckie ended up working on the majority. Fans generally didn't dig the classic vibe, and the lazy-daisy, pastoral record fared poorly. Carnival's first side largely consists of Mark Gardener's songs, while the latter is mainly Andy Bell's affair. Gardener's contributions are solid. "1000 Miles" lifts '60s jangle convincingly. "From Time to Time" is a "Vapour Trail" part two of sorts, lyrically, introduced with tasteful Rhodes tones from Andy Bell. Bell's songs, however, tend to falter. While he wrote the bulk of the band's prior top material, he's trumped here; in fact, Loz Colbert's "Natural Grace" wipes the mat with Bell's work. Perhaps Bell's ego was too big to recognize the lyrical shortcomings of "Crown of Creation," the poor Al Greenism of "Endless Road," and the outright flimsiness of "I Don't Know Where It Comes From," which features a kiddie choir. Despite the gaps in song quality and that hackneyed Creation cover, Carnival of Light creates a pleasant, freewheeling feeling throughout. The LP might have run better with the extraction of some of the duff, which is all ...

| | Jackpot F+ CD (2004)
Rich Man songs
$10.85 On F+, their debut for Surfdog, Rusty Miller and his Jackpot crew wander between sunny, jaded West Coast pop and hazy indie rock detachment. "Upside Down" and especially "Black Road" wrap '60s guitar lines around the sort of boozy allure that the Dandy Warhols do so well, while "Vaccine" ambles into Neutral Milk Hotel's territory. "If I had a night/I could sleep on your sofa," Miller drawls. "Watch your cable TV/Take all your pain killers." "Euphoria" is a rambling, acoustic-led number livened up with twangy leads that suggest Jackpot's alternative country genesis, but the electronically processed "When We Get Together" is happy to appropriate the same 2-Tone shuffle Gorillaz did for "Clint Eastwood." Miller again comes through lyrically on the latter -- "I'm sittin' here at work/Wishin' ...
| | New York Dolls One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This CD (2006)
Rich Man album
$14.59 As one of the key progenitors of punk, the New York Dolls created in their brief existence a sloppy, sleazy, glorious rock-&-roll sound that has rarely been equaled. That may explain why it took the Dolls 32 years to follow up their last proper studio album, 1974's TOO MUCH TOO SOON. The long hiatus can also be attributed to the deaths of three of the band's five original members--Johnny Thunders, Jerry Nolan, and Arthur Kane.
But where such circumstances would have relegated most acts to the dustbin of history, lead singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvian Sylvain recruited replacement musicians to create a new Dolls album in 2006's ONE DAY IT WILL PLEASE US TO REMEMBER EVEN THIS. What's even more surprising is that ONE DAY, though not quite on par with the band's monumental early releases, bristles with classic Dolls energy. Their ragged, bluesy bite and doo wop flourishes are here on tracks like "We're All in Love" and "Dance Like a Monkey," and even when the band sounds uncharacteristically tight and polished, there is still much to recommend the disc. It stands as a testament to the vital, enduring power of rock & roll.
DVD shot and compiled by Walker Lamond contains candid and insightful studio moments with founding members David ...
