General Musical DescriptionThis ever-shifting material is a progressive blend of old school and current cutting edge. Somehow, it manages to cover a wide array of different genres, while maintaining its own identity. People hear a surprisingly diverse number of influences in it, yet they are most struck by its individuality. Each song is different from the others. Each is unique, unexpected, now hard, now soft, and guitar driven. The focus is on the atmospheres and textures created within each piece. Many are dark edged or tinted with mystery. Every song is its own adventure, its own audio landscape. The sound is sometimes both atmospheric and heavy at the same time. While densely complex and layered, it all makes perfect sense to the ear. All of the songs portray both purpose and intent. They are musically emotional and dynamic. All four members fade in and out of the lead role. While there are many tempo and time signature changes, they never give the impression that they were done simply because the artists are capable of it. Instead, they were only done when they would add intensity or embellish the overall feeling of the song. This is a concept album with deep lyrical content. All of the song lyrics are available at the band’s website. Even though each song is very different from the others, there is a complete story being told. Lyrical examination may provide a look into the times we live in, ending with a ray of light. Not just a debut CD, but a debut sound. Beyond Jargon
$11.18 CHRISTMAS ON MARS might be the Flaming Lips' bona fide sci-fi epic, but EMBRYONIC is the musical equivalent of the final scenes of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY: transformative chaos that results in a new start. From THE SOFT BULLETIN onward, the Lips seemed focused on tidying the loose ends of their earlier work, almost to the point of constraining themselves. Their wilder side is unleashed on Embryonic's 18 tracks, and the band sounds more off-the-cuff than it has in years -- some tracks are barely longer than snippets, others are rangy epics, and it all holds together so organically that listeners might wonder just how much these songs were edited. Musically, EMBRYONIC is the least polite the Flaming Lips have been in nearly two decades, mixing in-the-red drums, blobby, dubby bass, squelchy wah-wah guitars, and sparkling keyboards into a swirl of sounds that are strangely liquid and abrasive at the same time. Occasionally, the band uses noise ...

Beyond Jargon
$12.49 The J Band, a revolution of rhythm and melody, is stirring souls and setting feet to dancing throughout all corners of the world, continuing what they began many years ago. It was in Davis, California where Jordan Lindsey and Amit Katzir crossed paths, each with a guitar and Jordan with a fresh set of songs. They quickly connected and thus their course was set out before them, ferociously playing wherever the spirit lead them. "It was like we had been playing together for years. Amit was the skilled master and I was the raw storm and together the music took life. It still amazes me."As the crowds grew so did the merry men on stage. First came Alan Lightner, the drummer/percussionist/steel drummer/singer with infectious passion. Next was Greg Magnuson, who sailed right in with bass and harmonies and a force on stage. Then there was d.j. Paul Ryan, who lifted everything to a wild rhythm and constant dance. "People would hear acoustic guitars with a dance beat and steel drums and they would be baffled, but sure enough they'd soon be dancing. ...
| | Ricky Guinto Intuition CD (2002)
Beyond Jargon
$11.39 Ricky Guinto may be a fresh faced solo artist, but he is definitely not new to the music scene. The songwriter and musician started his melodic journey at age 5 with the piano. Through the years he picked up both drum sticks and the guitar. As Ricky's knowledge of music grew so did his passion. This jack-of-all-trades used his passion to become a seasoned professional, releasing three CD's with the band he played guitar for, World Tribe. While gaining notoriety with several bands such as World Tribe, Kanaka Roots, South Side Hero, and I'kona, Ricky recorded a collection of his own compositions. "Intuition" ...
