Whimsical folkie Christine Lavin--known as much for her screwy sense of humor as for her lovely music--asked several fellow performers to fork over songs about their favorite delicacies. She recorded herself singing with each contributor on his or her song, and also got them to send her recipes, collected in the CD's 96-page "cookbooklet." The results are tasty, with contributions from such luminaries as Pete Seeger, the late Dave van Ronk, Doc Watson, and actor Jeff Daniels. The songs range from the literal to the transcendent, with lots of food-as-sex double-entendre in between.

| | Christine Lavin Runaway Christmas Tree CD (2003)
One Meat Ball CD music
$11.99 One of the wittiest and most insightful contemporary singer-songwriters, Christine Lavin, sets aside her customary focus on interpersonal relationships in the bewildering modern era to create a characteristic mixture of irreverent and genuine winter holiday songs. Discovering that she "just couldn't find a good Christmas/Kwanzaa/Solstice/Chanukah/ Ramadan/Boxing Day album," she rounded up seven other vocalists, a sackful of humorous, offbeat and sometimes moving seasonal songs, a couple of original stories, and created this lighthearted a cappella alternative to the usual cloying Christmas-season songbook. Inspired by the vocal techniques of Sol "Roundman" Weber," Christine enlisted singer-songwriter Julie ("From a Distance") Gold, Emily Bindinger and Margaret Dorn ...

| | Christine Lavin Folkzinger CD (2005)
One Meat Ball songs
$11.75 Folksinger and songwriter Christine Lavin's 17th release (and third for Appleseed Records) is very much a New York album, not so much as a stated theme, but the feel of the city and the after effects of 9/11 seem to drift in and out of the background of these songs like a half-remembered dream. Lavin hasn't by any means abandoned her good humor and wry, gently sarcastic view of the little oddities of contemporary life, or the murky, ambivalent ins and outs of relationships in the 21st century, but she has always been a New Yorker, and it shows here. She also has a political agenda, which is in full display on Folkzinger, ...
