1978's INFINITY was easily one of the most important albums in Journey's career up until that point. While it did spawn one sizeable hit, "Wheel in the Sky," more importantly INFINITY was singer Steve Perry's debut with the band. While touches of Journey's early fusion/progressive leanings can still be detected, a new sound and approach was right around the corner. With Perry now in the line-up, the band would soon be rocketing up the U.S. singles and albums charts.
Also available in a 3-pack with ESCAPE and FRONTIERS.
This is part of Columbia/Legacy's Master Sound series.

| | Journey Raised On Radio CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
Infinity album
$7.59 After a three-year layoff, Journey returned with 1986's RAISED ON RADIO. Longtime drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory had left the band prior to the album's recording, leaving singer Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, and keyboardist Jonathan Cain to fend for themselves.
While the album wasn't as big a blockbuster as the band's previous ...

| | Plane View Of The Barracudas CD (1968)
Infinity music CDs
$10.35 One of the better albums to come out of Calvin Newton's Justice Records label, A Plane View of the Barracudas has been selling for big bucks in Europe for years, partly based on the fact that there weren't many more than a thousand copies pressed. The CD is a welcome addition to the catalog -- these boys may have been a little sloppy, but they were ambitious, and they had the skills to realize a lot of those goals. As an extended jam, the version of "I'm a Man" here may be the best rendition this side of the Yardbirds' classic, and adds a few layers of pyrotechnics that Jeff Beck and company weren't ready to ignite -- lead guitarist Mike Parker has a field day romping and stomping over the basic material, and Sam Shaw's bass swells and surges beneath Parker's work. Donnie Thurston sounds like he's playing on cardboard boxes, but that's par for the course on a recording like this, and not necessarily a problem. "Shotgun" closes the album and CD, and is a pretty decent cover of a then current soul hit. The notes are minimal, but the music does truly speak for itself. Strangely enough, only their covers of Lennon-McCartney tunes like "I Call Your Name" don't come off too well (though their version of ...
| | Mick Jagger She's The Boss CD (1985)
Infinity songs
$12.99 On 1985's SHE'S THE BOSS, Mick Jagger leaves behind the classic blues- and R&B-influenced Rolling Stones sound and, instead, moves forward in a more contemporary vein. Jeff Beck (one of the many guests on the album) provides virtuosic guitar work, but here his approach has more in common with the transitional sounds of the mid-'80s than it does with old-school rock & roll. Further, Sly Dunbar's electronic drum kit adds a synthetic feel to many of these tracks.
Despite the lack of a strong Stones vibe, these songs still play to Jagger's strengths. For instance, "Running Out of Luck" is a simple tune that focuses on bad luck and demoralization (favorite Jagger subjects) to create a perfect combination of orthodox rock and mid-'80s pop. Likewise, the opening cut, "Lonely at the Top" is a straight-up rocker, gilded by heavy use of synthesizers. The highlight of SHE'S THE BOSS is "Hard Woman," a tender ballad about love gone wrong. On this selection, Jagger croons over a lush string section, while Pete Townshend fills up the spaces with gentle acoustic guitar strumming.

| | George Lewis And The Easy Riders Jazz Album CD (2001)
Infinity songs
$14.69 This set has plenty of spirit. Clarinetist George Lewis is in tune this time around and the primitive but perfectly fitting percussive playing of cornetist Fred Vigorito and trombonist Big Bill Bissonnette work well. The Easy Riders Jazz Band were Bissonnette's group and they loved the ensemble-oriented New Orleans jazz of Lewis. The live set is not flawless ...
