Purchase Monosex CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Willie Nelson Last Of The Breed CDs (2007)
Monosex
$16.95 LAST OF THE BREED partners Willie Nelson with two other legends of maverick country, Merle Haggard and Ray Price. With a collection of talent this archetypal, the title sounds less like a boast and more like a statement of fact. Price is an old-school country gentlemen hip enough to hang with the Outlaws, while Haggard and Nelson are probably the only pot-smoking hippies universally accepted by the red states.
LAST OF THE BREED is an easy-on-the-ears honky-tonk shuffle of a record. The trio ambles through many of the classics that made them famous and, surprisingly, the weather of age suits them well--particularly Price, always the best singer of the bunch, whose robust tenor has lost a step or two over the years. The lack of power gives frail yet touching readings to, among others, his own "Heartaches By The Number," and Hank Williams's classic "Lost Highway." The latter song features the angelic Jordanaires, and is probably the least ravaged and thereby most tragic version of this oft-covered song. The listener is led to think: If these guys can get lost, then we're all in trouble. Not to be outdone by Price, Haggard brings the only new original composition to this session, the easily mournful "If I Ever Get Lucky," while ol' Willie offers his gingerly jazzy vocal phrasing and light picking touch, which hasn't sounded this assured with ...
| | Atreyu Congregation Of The Damned CD (2009)
Monosex
$11.16 On their latest effort, Atreyu come with more of the same metalcore that listeners have come to expect from the band. All of the familiar elements are in place, with the alternating screaming/soaring vocals, thundering double bass drumming, and big, crunchy riffage. The difference here is that the band seems to have mellowed out a bit, opting for a more melodic approach. Like their last album, the songs here feel somewhat restrained, like they're just dying to break free of the polished production. The ...
| | Black Eyed Peas E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies) CD (2009)
Monosex
$12.59 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned with THE E.N.D. (an acronym for "Energy Never Dies"), their third studio effort. Combining Will.I.Am's thumping 808 kick drum-infused beats with production assistance from a host of collaborators (including vocoder-loving Torontoians MSTRKRFT and French house veteran David ...
| | Baroness Blue Record CDs (2009) Limited Edition; Deluxe Edition
Monosex
$13.58 Georgia-based psychedelic rock band (calling them a metal act seems very reductive, though there's some seriously headbangable material on this disc) Baroness has made a subtle but unmistakable evolutionary leap on this, their second full-length and a clear companion piece to 2007's RED ALBUM. It's hard to say exactly what new guitarist Pete Adams has brought to the band after replacing drummer Allen Blickle's brother Brian, but the band's established blend of Southern sludge riffs, druggy instrumental journeys, and melodic interstitial interludes, all propelled by a particularly thudding drum sound and held together by John Baizley's hoarse but clean vocals and gorgeous cover art, ...

| | Parkway Drive Horizons CDs (2007) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Monosex
$13.79 Aside from the Bee Gees or Kylie Minogue, you rarely hear much about popular Australian musical exports, and even less about Australian metal. It should come as no surprise that a country rife with deadly beauty and harsh deserts features some killer metal, and the deceptively named Parkway Drive certainly fit the bill. Armed with racing licks and amped-up drums, the songs on HORIZONS thrash and grind with conviction. Burned-black vocals from Winston McCall rasp along like gravel under hot tires, and the band mixes ...
