Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler, the two college-age clean-cut men who form the nexus of the All-American Rejects, have a knack for driving home a pop hook. Clearly weaned on power pop's history from the Beach Boys and Big Star to the Cars and Weezer and other more modern proponents, the Oklahoma outfit serves up gentle pop radiance with a hint of Replacements-style brashness on its self-titled debut. The All-American Rejects' songs capture a youthful simplicity without slipping into juvenile lyrics like many bands with a similar sound. There is an endearing innocence in tunes like "My Paper Heart" with its simple opening entreaty "please just don't play with me/my paper heart will bleed" over insistent acoustic guitar before a quiet storm replete with a tympani-sounding instrument. With their third outing, SOME CITIES, Doves created their most cohesive album to date. While the British trio's debut, LOST SOULS, conjured up a wonderfully melancholy mood, and its follow-up, THE LAST BROADCAST, expanded the band's sonic palette, SOME CITIES sees Doves fine-tuning their sound with the strengths of both previous releases. Atmospheric rock remains the group's calling card, as best exemplified by the shimmering "Almost Forgot Myself," the string-laden "The Storm," and the woozy "Shadows of Salford." Although the album is filled with mid-tempo tunes, "Black and White Town" picks up the pace with a Motown-like backbeat, "Walk in Fire" builds to a thrilling crescendo (much like THE LAST BROADCAST's "There Goes the Fear"), and "Sky Starts Falling" presents the trio in a buoyant, rocked-out mode. Crafting three excellent albums in a row is a tall order for any band, but with SOME CITIES, Doves have done exactly that. Limited edition pressing of their third includes a bonus DVD (NTSC/Region 0) unavailable on US pressing. The bonus DVD features a short film (approx 11 mins) of the 'making of' the album titled "Cities Under Construction", plus a photo gallery (set to an exclusive album instrumental) and the Director's Cut of the video for "Black and White Town" by acclaimed Director Lynne Ramsay. If the first two Doves albums, Lost Souls and The Last Broadcast, were records that sounded like they were conceived in Glastonbury-like vast open plains, each number a snapshot of the wide open countryside or of the rolling sea, then their third album, Some Cities, paints altogether different pictures. At points it's crunching and urban, sounding like a midnight high-speed joy ride through the industrial beating heart of the city (most noticeably on the turbo charged first single "Black and White Town"). At others, it's like a long lost soundtrack to some early '60s kitchen sink drama ("Someday Soon", "Shadows of Salford").
