2006's CHRIST ILLUSION marks a return to form for one of the fiercest and most influential metal bands in history. Slayer's original lineup reconvened in the studio for the first time since 1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS for CHRIST ILLUSION, and the results recall the classic sound of landmark thrash releases like 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD. Time hasn't dulled the band's terrifying intensity one iota; if anything, Slayer's sound crackles with renewed attack.
The breathtaking double-time drums, grinding guitar riff, and throat-shredding vocals on the opener, "Flesh Storm," signal the relentless sonic onslaught in store for the listener. Lyrically, too, Slayer is in fine form, exploring in typically dark fashion the pitfalls of religion, orthodoxy, and--with timely references to unrest in the Middle East--the ideology of war. But it's the band's musical chops that impress the most, with radical song structures, angular tempo changes, and blistering guitar solos that prove the legendary band is still a step ahead of their numerous followers.
"Christ Illusion" is Slayer's first new studio album since 2001, and the first recorded by the band's original line-up - Kerry King (guitars); Tom Araya (bass, vocals); Jeff Hanneman (guitars); Dave Lombardo (drums) - since 1990's "Seasons In The Abyss". "Christ Illusion" was produced by Josh Abraham and executive produced by Rick Rubin. "Christ Illusion" deals with familiar Slayer themes - god, religion, hate, and war.
Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass guitar); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums).
Recording information: NRG, North Hollywood, California.
Spin (p.112) - "[The album] blends the furious muscle of 2001's GOD HATES US ALL with the more melodic experimentation of their post-REIGN work." Uncut (p.97) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Metal production's tendency towards the crunchy and down-tuned rather suits the stop-start grind of 'Eyes Of The Insane'." Kerrang (Magazine) (p.66) - Ranked #18 in Kerrang's "20 Greatest Albums of 2006" -- "A blistering return to form that many fans hailed as the best Slayer album since the '80s." Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Slayer are operating at full power once again, delivering an album of breathtaking, defiantly old-school thrash..." | Christ Illusion Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Not all that.... I've just experienced(yet again)the hell of anticipation;when you wait five years for new music from a band as powerful, as accomplished as Slayer, you expect an album for the ages, one that will utterly blow your mind away. And space of time is not the only appetite whetter;the reunion of a former band member as influential as Dave Lombardo is sure to have fans everywhere spraying their collective undies. So there it is, five years since the nu-metallish God Hates us all(to me that's a load of crap, the label, not the album)with Dave back in the fold, we have Christ Illusion.I could appreciate the guys going back to their late 80's early 90's modus operandi (sketchy crude sleeve artwork, thirty minute album, short speed fixes that are as cauterizing as the lyrical content)but somehow it's got me saying 'I've heard it all before';the only change is a burgeoning maturity and just a little more complexity in song structure. All in all, not much to write home about; but then again, what do I know, I'm just a really jaded metalhead. In the meantime I'll be digging some High on Fire and Gojira, and praying that Metallica will come out with something awesome. Some will laugh at such a premise, but you never know. Slayer sure had their chance, unfortunately they fell short for me somehow. Submitted by mikestan (Gros Islet, St.Lucia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 7 of 7 found this helpful.
Not The Kings Of Thrash!! Sorry to say but some tracks are wacked. Yeah their Old School Stuff Sounds better but I'm not feeling the Christ Illusion Album! Ex-Drummer Paul Bostaph Brought out the best in Slayer but this album sounds weak and repetitious! More like a STAGNATION POINT!! Like what the comment below me told me to do is to Buy the last three EXODUS (The Real Kings of THRASH) Albums... I did and the EXODUS Albums make this Christ Illusion Album sound like Josh Groban on CRACK!! Submitted by Metal Head (New York, New York, USA) Was This Review Helpful? THRASH?? There Are Few Good Songs in this album! That's why I gave it Three Stars. If You really want to hear real Thrash Metal listen to EXODUS and their lasts three albums especially 'The Atrocity Exhibition'!! Then You'll Think Twice about this Album!! HO HUM So let Me get this straight and I could be wrong here--Fast equals good? Yeah these songs are fast, but it sounds like everything they have ever done. More of the same doesn't sound like progress and unless you are progressing, you are stagnating. Submitted by Terry (Los Angeles, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 4 found this helpful.

Christ Illusion
$11.59 Five Finger Death Punch stormed rock radio in 2007 with "The Bleeding" (from debut album THE WAY OF THE FIST), a powerful, emotionally tense track that matched vintage, Metallica-style thrash with a throat-shredding chorus more typical of late aughts metalcore. The Los Angeles-based band's sophomore disc WAR IS THE ANSWER mines much of the same territory as that breakout song, keeping the flame of the classic `80s Four Horsemen sound alive with snap-tight chugga-chugga guitar rhythms, minor-key, classical music-inspired clean/acoustic passages, and vocals dripping with a James Hetfield-approved combination of sensitive angst and macho defiance. First single "Hard to See" backs a catchy, harmony-vocal laden melody with a syncopated groove so rhythmically engaging it could almost be called funky, while the closing track "War is the Answer" takes a classic-sounding headbanging riff seemingly straight out of the Anthrax songbook and uses it to drive home one of several ultra-aggressive sentiments ("to me you're just a cancer/war is the answer"). Elsewhere, Five Finger Death Punch ...

| | Tool Aenima CD (1996)
Christ Illusion
$12.29 AENIMA was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. "Aenima" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
On its second full-length album, this hard-rocking quartet delivers 15 tracks of unrelenting aggression and focused intensity. Rather than overwhelm with huge sonic washes of guitar and booming drums, Tool employs a propulsive, snaky approach that makes use of undulating rhythms and clipped, percussive guitar riffs. Maynard James Keenan's vocals follow suit, opting for a heavily processed slow burn instead of the post-grunge bellow favored by so many hard-rock bands. Instead of flailing uncontrollably in all directions, the group's raw, energetic sound is tightly ...
| | Black Sabbath Paranoid CD (1971)
Christ Illusion
$9.09 PARANOID proved to be Black Sabbath's most focused, consistent, and successful record. Leaving behind the amorphous, extended jams of their debut for focused songs and a more structured sound, Black Sabbath virtually wrote the book on heavy metal with the ominous, unforgettable riffs, thunderous rhythms, and dark themes on this release. There are some up-tempo rockers, the famous title track for one, but for the most part PARANOID oozes along like a bad dream, as on the slinky, creepy opener, "War Pigs," or the lumbering thud of "Iron Man" (which boasts one of the most indelible electric guitar riffs in rock history).
The album's title is apt: PARANOID is filled with an edgy aggression ...
| | Dream Theater Images And Words CD (1992)
Christ Illusion
$10.49 While continuing to improve its musical chops and explore more progressive territory, Dream Theater reached its mainstream apex with 1992's IMAGES AND WORDS. Here the group capably combined prog-rock high-mindedness with metal crunch and commercial accessibility on the opening track "Pull Me Under," helping to snare an audience big enough to push this album past gold sales status.
What makes IMAGES AND WORDS stand out is the fluid marriage of ...
