| | Cham Ghetto Story CD Cham Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
The first full-length release from the artist formerly known as Baby Cham under his new abbreviated moniker, GHETTO STORY is built almost entirely around the strength of the title track. It's quite a tough act to follow, and none of the other cuts are able to match the raw power of that exceptional song. Still, with the help of producer extraordinaire Dave Kelly (a.k.a. The Stranger) and guest appearances from Majic Massey, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Akon, among others, Cham has put together an all-around tight album, presenting a harder supplement to the Sean Paul-brand of dancehall that has dominated the scene in the early 2000s.
Personnel: Dave Kelly, Leroy Barbie Romans.
Rolling Stone (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Chams' down-tempo music and earnest lyricism offer a stark contrast to the Jamaican dancehall scene..." Entertainment Weekly (p.138) - "[T]he Jamaican vocalist takes advantage of producer Dave Kelly's gritty lo-fi pulses, his unmistakable baritone adding bravado and empathy to each minimal loop." -- Grade: B+ Vibe (p.136) - "[B]uoyed by Cham's straight-from-the-gutter perspective....Cham's credentials are bona fide." Ghetto Story Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) bom! boddest cd out!!

Ghetto Story album
$13.25 The first release on Black Eyed Pea will.i.am's record label, THE DUTCHESS seems intent on giving Beyonce, Kelis, and every female pop/R&B singer a run for her money. With production help from Polow the Don and will.i.am (who also contributes raps to a couple of songs), Fergie delivers a record that kicks out spare club tracks inspired by Missy Elliott and M.I.A. (such as the disc's lead-off single "London Bridge"), alongside sultry soul ballads ("Clumsy"). There aren't many surprises here, but THE DUTCHESS is a glossy, fun, and satisfying album, which is exactly what her fans are expecting.

The talented vocalist shows he's able to juggle a few different R&B styles from seductive love songs ("I Wanna Love You") to deeper dirges of self-reflection ("The Rain") to heartfelt tributes to his homeland ("Mama Africa"). KONVICTED also has its share of hardcore hip-hop, with guest appearances from Styles-P and Snoop Dogg; Eminem even checks in on the official club hit, "Smack That."

| | Ugk Underground Kingz CDs (2007)
Ghetto Story songs
$9.69 Long before Houston rap came to define the sound of the Dirty South, UGK (the Underground Kingz), along with the Geto Boys, were holdin' it down strong for H-Town. While the duo of Bun B and Pimp C never achieved major cross-over success--spitting woozy gangsta tales a few too many years before mainstream radio was prepared for them--they gained a loyal fanbase and the respect of their fellow MCs (chief among them Jay-Z, who featured UGK on his classic track "Big Pimpin'").
After a brief separation marked by prison time for Pimp C and solo albums by both, UGK came back strong on UNDERGROUND KINGZ, a sprawling dripped-and-draped Dirty South block-rocker. A veritable who's-who from across the entire hip-hop spectrum pay their respects here, including Talib Kweli, Dizzee Rascal, Three 6 Mafia, T.I., and Big Daddy Kane. While glittery guest lists are a dime a dozen in hip-hop, the breadth and diversity of those on board here is proof positive that everybody wants to be down with the Kingz.

| | DJ Cam Soulshine CDs (2002)
Ghetto Story album
$13.05 While DJ Vadim -- another European hip-hop mixer whose career began on the same trajectory -- pursued breakbeat hip-hop into the realm of heavily American/underground rap, the production work of Frenchman DJ Cam has become much smoother and closer in sound and execution to the British acid jazz scene. Soulshine is his smoothest record yet, opening with a breezy jazz dancer ("Summer in Paris") with a live band sporting a crossover groove while vocalist Anggun enthuses about the unique Parisian vibes. Cam also cultivates his American R&B connection, drafting Cameo's Larry Blackmon and Nathan Leftenant for a serviceable Roy Ayers impression, while "Condor (Espionage)" features Guru (aka Baldhead Slick) relaxing over a live cut. For DJ Cam, musical maturity seems to mean arrangements utilizing a live band, and though Soulshine has them throughout, there's much less of innovation happening here than on his early work. Two tracks that work are the pair of real hip-hop tracks: "Bounce" and "Voodoo Child," the latter a tough remix by DJ Premier with Afu Ra on vocals. ~ John Bush

| | Mungo Jerry Baby Jump: The Definitive Collection CD (2005) (Import) Import
Ghetto Story CD music
$29.99 Hmmm, "definitive," you say? Well, let's see. The need for a truly all-encompassing Mungo Jerry collection has been evident ever since the early '90s brought the first in the long line of CD compilations that simply followed the same laws as the LPs that preceded them -- here are the hits, here's the odd B-side, here are a couple of randomly selected album tracks. Mungo Jerry meant so much more than that, even if that brief does sum up most listeners' total knowledge of the band's output. With 60 tracks at its disposal, Baby Jump certainly comes close to the ideal. Concentrating on their years with the Dawn subsidiary of Pye Records, it travels from the debut chart-topper "In the Summertime" through the surprisingly peerless run of hits that were spread over the next four years, before winding up with the final gasp of glory that was "Wild Love," an insanely contagious number that really should have been a bigger hit than it was. In between times, each of the band's studio albums is cherry-picked for highlights, with the group's practice of unleashing non-LP B-sides flavored by the inclusion of numbers that are almost as well known in their own right as the hits that accompanied them -- the banned-by-the-BBC "Have a Whiff on Me," some ...
