| | Cat Scientist Cicada CD Cat Scientist Discography of CDs
Austin, Texas's Cat Scientist specializes in playfully tossed-off keyboard-driven dance numbers that move the feet and engage the mind with intelligent and often goofy lyrics. The band is as adept at creating memorable melodies ("Precipice") as club-banging techno numbers ("Cicada," "I Saved an Airplane"). The grandness of scale and celebratory vibe of their live show translates effortlessly to the studio.
Personnel: Julien Peterson (vocals, keyboards, bass instrument); Brant Bingamon, Rae Craig, Brant Bingamon (vocals, keyboards); Bill Anderson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Cisco Ryder (vocals, keyboards, drums).
Recording information: Sweatbox Studios, Austin, TX.

Cicada album
$9.54 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with covers of Skeeter Davis' "The End of the World," the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," and a version of "Daydream Believer" that is easily the slowest on record. ...

| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD (2009)
Cicada music CDs
$8.79 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march ...

| | Robin & Linda Williams Deeper Waters CD (2004)
Cicada album
$14.45 Over the past 30 years, singers and songwriters Robin and Linda Williams have assembled one of the most daunting, emotionally honest, and brilliantly crafted catalogs in American music. Their now trademark tapestry of bluegrass, traditional mountain folk ballads, Southern gospel, country, and hillbilly blues is singular. With Deeper Waters, the album that marks their debut on the Minnesota-based Red House label, and their 30th anniversary as a recording and touring unit, the Williams have issued what amounts to nothing short of a masterpiece and perhaps their most inspired recorded moment. Once in a while, it is possible to glance at a cover to know that what is contained within its folds is special, something so completely out of the ordinary, it seems to speak before it is placed in the box and played. Deeper Waters is just such an item, from the sleeve with photography by Michael Wilson and a gorgeous design by Carla Leighton to its phenomenal players, who include Mike Auldridge, Jimmy Gaudreau, Mark Schatz, and Rickie Simpkins, to its guest vocalists: Iris DeMent, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Schuyler Fisk, and actress Sissy Spacek. The true wealth of any recording by the Williams is in the songs, of course, and this batch is glorious. The pair wrote or co-wrote all but one track here. The pair co-wrote with Dave Hull, Jerome Clark, Tim O'Brien, Jimmy Fortune, and Jim Watson. There's the pastoral melancholy of "October Light," the shimmering dobro and mandolin that entwine with Robin's guitar and vocal of haunted bygone love in "Whippoorwill," and the hunted, devastating dislocation of "Leaving This Land," where the grain of Linda's ...
