| | Tiny Idols Vol. 2: Transmissions From The Indie Underground 1995-1999 CD
Various Artists: Fashioncolt, Galaga, Madison Electric. The second volume of Tiny Idols looks to the very deep underground of indie pop from 1995 (where Tiny Idols left off) to the end of the millennium. This one seems deeper under the radar. As the first set of gems taught us, just because no one's ever heard of it -- with the possible exception of the musicians and their families -- doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. The Nuggets compilations offered that point of wisdom a long, long time ago. There is a beautiful Van Dyke Parks meets Anglo-futurism on Suede Chain's "Departure and Arrival," the garagey and sexy "Three Times a Day," by Chantigs, Mazarin's amazingly sophisticated and charming "Wheats," the angular "Neptune Drive," with a singer who sounds eerily like Gary Numan, and Madison Electric's faux psychedelic "Heavy Petal." ~ Thom JurekMagnet (p.89) - "There's some genuine greatness here worth lamenting the loss of: the PET SOUNDS-like stylings of Detroit's Teach Me Tiger...[and] the new baroque, ELO-esque art rock of Illinois' Suede Chain..." | | Jason Mraz Mr. A-Z CD (2005) Limited Edition; DualDisc
Tiny Idols Vol. 2: Transmissions From The Indie Underground 1995-1999
$21.79 This release was produced by the legendary Steve Lillywhite at Allaire Studios near Woodstock, NY. This release is Mraz's most inspired and thoughtful record to date. The dualdisc includes the entire album, 20 minute DVD documentary, photo gallery, full lyrics, and 36-page personal journal with exclusive polaroids.
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. Personnel: Jason Mraz (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Raul Midón, Bill Bell (guitar); Kevin Kadish (acoustic guitar); Nicole Bayer (cello); Eric Hinojosa (keyboards); Ian Sheridan (bass instrument); Adam King (drums); Raul Rekow (congas, percussion); Karl Perazzo (timbales, percussion); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Rachael Yamagata, Lee Davis High School Choir, Noel "Toca" Rivera (background vocals). In case you didn't catch the pun in the title of Jason Mraz's sophomore album, Mr. A-Z, the perpetually sophomoric singer/songwriter repeats it in the chorus of "Wordplay," the first single from this follow-up to his hit 2002 debut, Waiting for My Rocket to Come. It's a play on his last name, which is appropriate, because Jason Mraz is primarily concerned with two things: himself and sex. But even when he's talking about the latter, he fits the former into the equation -- "I've been working on getting you off, so get on board," for instance -- because he does consider himself to be quite a compelling presence. After all, he's "been a new sensation," as he declares on "Wordplay," which is likely the first single to ever be about an artist planning to beat the sophomore slump by having a hit with the very tune you're currently hearing. In this song, Mr. A-Z himself ...
