Was Here album
$14.15 Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential election, and it turned out to be both his most overtly political and most effectively concise offering to date.
With a mix of country and straightforward rock & roll, Earle engages in rabble-rousing (the title track), tells the tales of people victimized by the war in Iraq ("Home to Houston," "Rich Man's War"), and lambasts stifling conservative forces on the homefront ("F the CC"). There are a couple of love songs thrown in for good measure, and they're all the more affecting for their marked contrast. THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW seamlessly blends the personal and the political without a trace ...

| | Rodney Crowell Outsider CD (2005) Digipak
Was Here songs
$15.89 The fact that Crowell covers a Bob Dylan song here (a lovely take on "Shelter from the Storm," rendered as a duet with Emmylou Harris) is not coincidental. The influence of Dylan hangs heavy in Crowell's songwriting, from his critiques of consumer culture ("The Obscenity Prayer") to his moments of personal revelation ("Beautiful Despair"). Help from luminaries like Harris, John Prine, and Buddy and Julie Miller help round out the sound of the THE OUTSIDER, another fine addition to Crowell's increasingly impressive catalogue.
Singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell's literate, introspective lyrics and his musical mix of country, rock, and folk continues to develop and deepen on this 2005 release. Whereas 2003's FATE'S RIGHT HAND leaned toward rootsy-but-modern country, THE OUTSIDER turns up the guitars, as the amped-up opener, "Say You Love Me," indicates, and the slinky, thumping title track confirms. But even while Crowell adds muscle to his sound, his pen is still mightier, and THE OUTSIDER is filled with clever turns of phrase, satiric barbs, and ...
| | Chris Knight Enough Rope CD (2006)
Was Here album
$13.89 On Chris Knight's fourth album, ENOUGH ROPE, the country-rock singer-songwriter offers up another winning round of tunes about various down-and-out characters. A kindred spirit of lauded storytellers such as Steve Earle, Tom T. Hall, and Bruce Springsteen, the Kentucky-raised Knight excels at rustic narratives, as revealed on the gritty "Jack Blue" and the melancholy "Cry Lonely." Given Knight's husky voice and pedal-steel-tinged songs, ENOUGH ROPE should appeal to country fans that like their ...
