| | Victor Noriega Stone's Throw CD Victor Noriega Discography of CDs
"Stone's Throw is an impressive debut recording from a pianist and composer of considerable talent. Noriega's tunes crackle with individuality, making it clear that his ambitions reside in innovation not imitation.Introspective at times, energetic and boundary-stretching at others, these tunes seamlessly blend jazz and modern classical influences, expertly rendered by Noriega and his trio. Ranks with the best jazz CDs of the year so far. Victor Noriega is a player to watch."--Gordon ToddJazz Music DirectorKBCS 91.3 FM/Seattle------CD REVIEW: Victor Noriega's Stone's ThrowArticle by Todd MatthewsOne of my favorite jazz combinations is the piano-bass-drum trio. True, there is nothing quite like a good trumpet player or saxophonist to really make a song soar. But this particular small-group ensemble always seems to outdo and impress -- despite what appear to be limited resources. When a gifted jazz pianist has a talent for composition combined with the ability to layer chords and sounds in an elegant and rhythmic manner, he or she can create depth and layering in music that truly entertains and, more importantly, transcends. Less is more: that is the overriding quality of this classic jazz-trio arrangement. Jazz pianist Victor Noriega proves this point well -- particularly on his new album Stone's Throw. In the summer of 2002, the Seattle-based pianist and composer entered the studio with bassist Willie Blair, drummer Eric Eagle, and producer Charlie Smith to produce a fine example of just how much punch a small-group ensemble can deliver. In early-March 2004, Noriega celebrated the release of Stone's Throw with a performance at Tula's -- a treat for enthusiasts of the jazz piano variety. This album works well on so many levels. Noriega is a gifted composer who seems to approach the music from a classically-trained perspective. This isn't your basic head-solo-solo-solo-head (again) jazz format so common among jazz trios. Rather, Noriego's tunes are layered, complex, interesting and rhythmic. The songs are not formulaic or pre-determined. Noriega has so much up his sleeve, the end result is a richness that is exciting to hear from young composers such as Noriega. Simply put, this is very original songwriting that leaves a listener feeling that he or she has gone on an uncharted musical journey of sorts. The album's opening track "Lassitude" has a waltz-like introduction -- almost classical in its tone and structure. Blair's bass notes pulse throughout the song, keeping the group's rhythm and timing in check while Noriega and Eagle spar with one another during some very beautiful piano-drum exchanges. The album's title track follows a similar pattern of structure, before exploding three-quarters of the way through the tune with an exchange among the musicians that is explosive and impressive. "Shocked" is another standout on the album -- with Eagle's power-drumming and Noriega's gift for improvisation leaving the listener breathless. The album's last track -- "Like Kings" -- is a haunting ballad that employs that classical approach that makes Noriega's songwriting stand out from other jazz composers. Noriega's ability to share the songs with his band mates is another strength on this album. It's easy to listen to this CD and forget that a pianist heads up the band and wrote eight of the nine tunes. Noriega is more interested in conversing musically with the others than overzealously soloing and stealing the thunder on this album. And thank goodness for that! Bassist Blair is one of my favorite area musicians right now, and Eagle has a sound on the drums that is all his own. Noriega is a gifted musician and composer, and Stone's Throw reminds listeners of the power and clarity of the piano-bass-drum jazz trio. This article originally appeared in Earshot Jazz magazine. Stone's Throw
$18.19 ONAJE ALLAN GUMBSRemember Their Innocence"Remember Their Innocence", is the latest edition in the growing discography of pianist-keyboardist-composer-arranger Onaje Allan Gumbs. "Remember Their Innocence" is a recording that aptly mirrors the extraordinarily broad-based pallet of experiences he has enjoyed and enhanced with his presence. Solidly based in jazz, "Remember Their Innocence" is blessed with a musically diverse sensibility that's quite accessible to both hard core jazz enthusiasts and those who crossover. Onaje has crafted an acoustic date full of good grooves and superior playing. Befitting both the breadth and depth of his impressive musical credentials, and the affiliations he has enjoyed with great musicians, the varied cast he has assembled to give wing to his compositions includes some of the most noted contemporary musicians; they include drummers Billy Kilson, George Gray and Vince Ector, bassists Kenny Davis, Marcus McLaurine and Miriam Sullivan, horn men Roger Byam, Eddie Allen, harmonica virtuoso Gregoire Maret and special guest saxophonist Sadao Watanabe."Each of the artists on my record are all master craftsmen who understand my vision without sacrificing their individuality" Onaje says. "Sadao Watanabe was not originally scheduled to be on the record. However when I hung out with him at his own session during the same time period as my recording, I casually asked him if he would consider playing on my date. Without missing a beat, he agreed, despite my modest budget. He and all of the musicians and singers gave me so much talent, cooperation and love during these sessions." "Remember Their Innocence" is also blessed with guest vocalists whose names you may not immediately recognize, but once you experience them on this disc, they will be impossible to forget. Dennis Collins [who also participated on Onaje's "Dare to Dream" date], and Branice McKenzie are two of the most talented vocalists out here,Onaje enthuses. They are two fine artists who don't get enough recognition or exposure. Another key contributor, from the spoken word side, is poet Sharrif Simmons, who lends his cool, crisp cadences to "All I Hear",which is aptly subtitled (Quiet Passion). Clearly Onaje Allan Gumbs knows a thing or three about crafting vocal tracks, skills he obviously learned on the bandstand with Dianne Reeves, Carmen Lundy,Grady Tate and NEA Jazz Master Betty Carter in addition to sitting behind the studio controls with Phyllis Hyman, Vanessa Rubin, Marlena Shaw, and Will Downing. The compositions, all written or co-written by Onaje, reflect a hip sense of narrative momentum, all leading back to the title track. The songs are shaped pretty much around the title track, "Remember Their Innocence", Onaje agrees. It's a song that recognizes the innocence as well as the innate wisdom of children. It also reflects the fact that as adults, we still possess those childlike qualities that we should never overlook. The ...

Stone's Throw
$18.99 Kim Mills' new CD will evoke the image of this guy sitting on a stool in a relaxed setting singing some really hip standards. No matter what commercial radio stations try to tell you, this is Cool Jazz. Cool Jazz is when you can sit back and close your eyes and connect with the performer."At a time when vocalists are publicly stating that they no longer enjoy doing standards, Kim Mills not only shows you that he enjoys doing them, but also that you should enjoy hearing him do them. With the veteran cast of sidemen backing him up, he settles in for a set that's relaxed but not dull. Ron Elliston's chord voicing and comping can make even a novice recording ...
