This double-disc set is a near-flawless introduction to New Zealand-based noise rockers the Dead C. Collecting key tracks from the band's many (now obscure) releases over the years, the set is as much a journey through the deep undergound of '90s indie rock as it is a look at the Dead C's evolution as noise merchants. With releases on such legendary imprints as Flying Nun, Xpressway, Forced Exposure, and of course the mighty Siltbreeze, the Dead C were bonafide undergound heros.
Of course, they would be nothing if not for the music. Early tracks such as "Max Harris," "Hell is Now," "and "Constellation" come across like extremeley lo-fi, less disciplined takes on SISTER-era Sonic Youth, and while that may sound less than desirable, it is in fact close to heavenly. The later cuts featured on disc two find the Dead C in a no less adventurous mode but utilizing a more cerebral, studied approach to improvisational noisemaking, as on the precision drone of "Voodoo Spell" from 1995's WHITE HOUSE LP. The band's vast catalog is worth investigating in its entirety, but VAIN ERUDITE AND STUPID is an ideal starting point for learning about the Dead C's celestial clang. Vain Erudite And Stupid: Selected Works 1987-2005 CD music
$13.15 An utterly unique accomplishment, Scott Walker's THE DRIFT is the enigmatic British-based singer-songwriter's first official album since 1995's challenging TILT. Those looking for the Brechtian drama and crooner stylings of Walker's lauded late-'60s work will happily find them on these 10 haunting tracks, albeit in altered forms that often bypass melody to create what sometimes recalls a chilling sonic abstraction of Edgar Allan Poe's writings.
While two extended tracks, "Clara" and "Cue," wander down some frightening paths (occasionally calling to mind Kronos Quartet's BLACK ANGELS), and make up a considerable amount of THE DRIFT, the record also includes slightly less daunting pieces such as "Cossacks Are," which builds to propulsive rhythmic passages, and "Jesse," ...

Vain Erudite And Stupid: Selected Works 1987-2005 music CDs
$6.79 George Strait may have landed his first number one in 1982, making him an "overnight sensation," but he'd been working for it since 1976. Strait From the Heart boasts "Fool-Hearted Memory," a perfect slow two-step that raged in all the dancehalls in America for half a year and sent folks to the bins in droves seeking out Strait's records. What they found was a singer of uncommon vitality who could sing honky tonk, countrypolitan, and the new traditional sounds that were just beginning to assert themselves after the first wave of "new country." The new Strait fans were interested ...
