Were this a snarky music blog with more attitude than substance, a simple "You said it, not us" would be all the review necessary of The New Pathetic. On their debut album, German punk-metal outfit Today Forever proffer a limp mishmash of screamo vocals, post-hardcore unison riffing, and various other current styles, all jumbled together with no sense of musical cohesion. Skipping from the whiny emo of the title track and "The Trigger Pulled" to the faceless indie rock of "Champagne for the Chambermaid," to the plodding thrash of "Adventures or Nothing," The New Pathetic sounds like the work of a band who can't decide just which bandwagon they most want to jump. As a result, they don't perform particularly well in any of their chosen styles, and they seem utterly incapable of blending their wide set of influences into anything new or unique. Even the fact that Today Forever manage to pack all 14 songs' worth of this musical indecision into less than 30 minutes doesn't really help the album, because the short, stilted songs sound like the band is speeding through a selection of unfinished fragments. There is very little to recommend here. ~ Stewart Mason

New Pathetic album
$10.39 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's ...
| | Katatonia Night Is The New Day CD (2009)
New Pathetic CD music
$14.04 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering songs by Will Oldham and Jeff Buckley. It's unsurprising to learn that Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt helped out by performing the harsh vocals on Katatonia's Brave Murder Day album and Sounds of Decay EP in 1996 and 1997, since Night Is the New Day songs ...
| | Epica Design Your Universe CD (2009)
New Pathetic music CDs
$13.39 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death ...
| | Breaking Benjamin Saturate CD (2002)
New Pathetic songs
$10.45 It's a testament to the conviction of Breaking Benjamin that two of its members quit another band already signed to a major label to join what was, commercially, much less of a sure thing. SATURATE's success proved them right, though. A melting pot of post-grunge riffs, nu-metal power, and classic rock accessibility, Breaking Benjamin offers something for hard rock fans of all stripes. Melodic choruses and signature riffs rub shoulders with screeching, from-the-gut ...
| | Heavy Metal CD (1981) Original Soundtrack
New Pathetic album
$6.09 The title Heavy Metal is somewhat misleading. Sure, this terrific soundtrack from the 1981 animated cult favorite features heavy metal and hard rock numbers. But the title refers to National Lampoon's sci-fi/fantasy magazine on which the film is based. Musically, Heavy Metal offers more than the title suggests, and the songs fit perfectly with their respective film segments. Heavy Metal was originally a double album, but at 62 minutes it fits just fine on one CD. Sixteen songs are contributed by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Cheap Trick, Devo, Donald Fagen, Don Felder, Grand Funk Railroad, Sammy Hagar, Journey, Nazareth, Stevie Nicks, Riggs, and Trust; Cheap Trick, Felder, and Riggs each provide two. Most songs are exclusive to this soundtrack. The best-known song here is Journey's ballad "Open Arms." Blue Oyster Cult's darkly menacing "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is a haunting gem. Devo's quirky, new wave interpretation of the Allen Toussaint-penned "Working in the Coal Mine" was a minor hit. Black Sabbath's blistering "The Mob Rules" is a fine example of the underrated Ronnie James Dio era. Felder's "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)" and "All of You" are well-crafted, and they make a good argument that he was the Eagles' ...
| | Iron Maiden Killers CD (1981) Enhanced CD
New Pathetic CD music
$13.75 KILLERS is based on more straight-ahead heavy metal, departing from Iron Maiden's 1980 self-titled debut, which had more of a punk edge (a facet often cited as an important stepping stone for "thrash metal" years later). Nonetheless the first album was a huge surprise hit in the band's native England, debuting within the Top Five upon release. The group's second release one year later, KILLERS sets its sights on making inroads in America, touring stateside for the very first time. The album was also the first for guitarist Adrian Smith, who replaced Dennis Stratton.
The best-known track remains the renegade ...
