End Of The Wizard album
$16.09 When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks such as the Gene Simmons-sung rockers "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" and "Russian Roulette," sit ambitious pieces such as "Stand," which employs a Motown-influenced chorus melody, sophisticated arrangement, and Beach Boys-style harmonies, and "All For the Glory" and "Lightning Strikes," which are vocal showcases from new guys Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer (respectively). Interestingly, ...
| | Rammstein Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CDs (2009) Bonus Tracks; Deluxe Edition; Digipak
End Of The Wizard CD music
$17.59 Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade, and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT. The group's loyal fans have remained with them through the '00s and have braved all the difficult ...

| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
End Of The Wizard songs
$10.65 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented ...

| | Raven All Systems Go! The Neat Anthology CD (2002)
End Of The Wizard album
$13.95 This 20-track anthology by speed metal band Raven includes "Don't Need Your Money," "Hard Ride," and "UBX."
Raven was best when they had no idea what they were doing. The first several years of the band's existence helped kick-start the NWOBHM movement, gave a neophytic Metallica a bigger band to hit the road with on the infamous Kill 'Em All for One tour, helped put a fledgling Neat label on the map, and became one of the first underground acts to sign to a major. Unfortunately, the latter accomplishment is not fondly remembered as a victorious moment, since hindsight shows that this upward mobility was the start of a downward cycle as the group lost its core fan base by going in a more commercial direction. In that respect, All Systems Go! is a bit of revisionist history, and being subtitled "The Neat Anthology," it makes no bones about it, as all 20 tracks date from the first three marvelous LPs that Raven -- full of youthful energy and a swagger confident in world domination, even if you could tell they had no idea how they would go about attaining it -- unleashed upon an unsuspecting world. Although this genuflection has honest liner notes from noted European metal journalist Malcolm Dome, it lacks the latter material that had dozens ...

| | Dave Matthews Band Gorge CDs (2004) With DVD
End Of The Wizard music CDs
$21.25 Though the Dave Matthews Band has released several live albums, THE GORGE stands out from the pack due to its unique recording environment. The outdoor venue in question is carved out of the basalt cliffs adjacent to Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, a canyon in the Cascade mountain range. The space is renowned both for its scenic splendor and natural acoustic properties. As such, the sound quality here is warmer and clearer than a typical concert recording, and the ensemble seems inspired to deliver a top-notch performance. As on the group's other live outings, several tracks here are much longer than their studio counterparts. Particular beneficiaries of this treatment include the baritone sax-driven rocker "Two Step" and the funky world-beat exploration "Lie in Our Graves." In addition to the two audio discs, the set also includes a DVD that presents ...
