$3.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who ...

Drive
$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind ...
| | Syd Barrett Barrett CD (1970)
Drive
$8.85 Wright and Gilmour also accompany Barrett on much of the material. Their tasteful blend of murmured bass, harmonium, and piano nicely complements Barrett's acoustic strumming and the album's slower pace and slightly darker mood, providing a counterpoint to Barrett's dislike of conventional song structure. From the seemingly paranoid free-association of "Rats" to the dirge "Maisie," Barrett seems to be channeling his wounded psyche directly to the vinyl. But just when you think you've heard it all, Barrett surprises with the beautiful (and almost conventional) "Gigolo Aunt." The importance of the contributions that Syd Barrett--a man simultaneously years ahead and years behind the times--made to music are undeniable.
If THE ...
| | Dar Williams Green World CD (2000)
Drive
$15.65 It ain't easy being queen. In the late 1990s, Dar Williams emerged as the unchallenged ruler of the folk singer-songwriter roost, and her Cry, Cry, Cry side-project with Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky heightened her profile even further. This all added up to a great deal of expectation surrounding THE GREEN WORLD.
Williams did not shrink from the challenge. For one thing, THE GREEN WORLD is the least "folk"-sounding of all her recordings. The rhythm section of Joe Jackson bassman Graham Maby and former Wings drummer Steve Holley provides an expansive, rock-inflected attack for Williams' very personal, lyrically detailed songs. It's not just the band or the production, though; it sounds like Williams wrote many of these songs with a wider appeal in mind. A number of the tunes are catchier ...

| | Paul Oakenfold Bunkka CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Drive
$14.65 The wide-ranging, freewheeling modes of BUNKKA (the name comes from Peter Gabriel's studio in the UK, where the album was recorded) are comparable with the catchall stylings of Paul Oakenfold's fellow dance enthusiast, Moby. So it should come as little surprise to anyone who followed Oakenfold's career over the pervious decade that he's come up with an album that's at least as eclectic as anything the aforementioned techno elf had produced lately.
Oakenfold is best known as a dance remix artist, whose credits also include producing Happy Mondays' best-selling PILLS 'N' THRILLS & BELLYACHES and remixing tracks for U2. So the inclusion of several guitar-heavy tracks, plus a guest appearance from Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, should raise few eyebrows, but it's with dance-flavored cuts such as "Southern Sun" and "Ready Steady Go" that he appears most at home. While his inspiration obviously comes from reworking other artists' tracks, he takes a good stab at constructing (and deconstructing) his own efforts, aided by guest appearances from Tricky, Nelly Furtado, and Ice Cube, whose "Get 'Em Up" is one of the high points here. While Oakenfold's talents as an original artist may be limited, on BUNKKA he makes the most of his alchemical abilities, and the results are occasionally stellar.
Bunkka is Oakenfold's genuine debut as an artist - emphasizing his roots in rock and hip-hop - this is not a DJ album. Guest artists include Nelly Furtado & Tricky, Ice ...
