Winter Flowers Music Review Purchase Winter Flowers CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Badfinger No Dice CD (1970)
Winter Flowers
$11.59 The track list includes a few genuine killers. "No Matter What," a compact gem that recalls the melodic innocence of the early Beatles, may be the band's apex. "Without You" is the band's original version of a quirky power ballad that Harry Nilsson would soon turn into a pop smash. The five extra tracks included with this reissue offer a variety of treats. The fiery "Get Down" displays a hard, bluesy edge and searing lead guitar, while "Friends Are Hard to Find" is all tight, gentle harmonies. These are welcome additions to Badfinger's great, underrated catalog.
Discovered by Paul McCartney and signed to the Beatles' Apple Records, Badfinger was, for many fans, the next best thing to the Fab Four. But even if the band did start as a Beatles wannabe, it eventually forged a successful power-pop style ...
| | Devendra Banhart Rejoicing In The Hands CD (2004)
Winter Flowers
$11.99 "Will Is My Friend," "Poughkeepsie," and other songs benefit from some string and piano overdubs, but essentially, this is solo Banhart, with his seemingly tossed-off yet strangely anachronistic tunes creeping out like incense-perfumed air. Banhart's deft acoustic guitar finger-picking and vocal warbling show the influence of country blues masters like Blind Willie McTell and Skip James, while another of his idols, reclusive 1970s folk icon Vashti Bunyan, appears on the title track. Whether observing how a friend's hair is like "Insect Eyes" or rattling off the Elvis Presley filmography, Banhart purrs with such a mystic, neo-hippie vibe that he could lull even the staunchest nihilist to a love-in.
Acclaimed eccentric singer/songwriter Devendra Banhart takes a step ...
| | Low Lifetime Of Temporary Relief (10 Years Of B-Sides And Rarities) CDs (2004)
Winter Flowers
$42.59 This release includes a 32-page booklet and a bonus DVD featuring music videos, live footage, and a series of documentaries by Marc Gartman.
While many artists release B-sides and rarities that are often little more than curiosities, the Duluth, Minnesota band Low consistently issued excellent non-album tracks on various singles and compilations during the course of its first 10 years together (1993-2003). For an indie group with such a seemingly limited palette--male/female vocals, guitar, bass, and spare percussion--the trio is surprisingly dynamic, with songs ranging from trademark slow, minimal pieces to gentle folk tunes to, yes, even punked-out rock numbers.
Of the 50-plus tracks featured here, more than a dozen are covers, ranging from a reverb-laden take on Wire's "Heartbeat" to an intentionally bad rendition of Journey's "Open Arms," with tunes by the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Winter Flowers
$11.89 Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, decade-spanning rock anthology.
This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through ...
| | Scott Walker Drift CD (2006)
Winter Flowers
$13.75 While two extended tracks, "Clara" and "Cue," wander down some frightening paths (occasionally calling to mind Kronos Quartet's BLACK ANGELS), and make up a considerable amount of THE DRIFT, the record also includes slightly less daunting pieces such as "Cossacks Are," which builds to propulsive rhythmic passages, and "Jesse," a brooding song seemingly rising up from some forsaken underground chamber. Far from accessible, yet mesmerizing in its bleak minimalist vision, THE DRIFT once again reinforces Walker's reputation as a fascinating and thoroughly unconventional artist.
An utterly ...
| | Black Heart Procession Spell CD (2006) Digipak
Winter Flowers
$12.95 THE SPELL, the seventh release from San Diego's the Black Heart Procession, combines the band's early minimalist tendencies with the rock richness of 2002's AMORE DEL TROPICO. The Procession still wade in dark, melancholic waters, offering up Gothic Americana soundscapes ...

| | Leadbelly Legendary Masters Series CD (1995) Import
Winter Flowers
$13.25 There are dozens of Leadbelly compilations available, but THE LEGENDARY MASTERS SERIES stands out. Where most anthologies focus, almost by necessity, on one period of Leadbelly's prolific career or one aspect of his multifaceted musical style, the 16-track LEGENDARY MASTER SERIES attempts, and largely succeeds, to provide a general introduction to Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter for novices.
Beginning with his earliest commercial recordings, in 1935, and continuing through his career until his death ...
| | Black Foliage: Animation Music By The Olivia Tremor Control CD (1999)
Winter Flowers
$12.39 Olivia Tremor Control's debut DUSK AT CUBIST CASTLE alternated between pop-psych gems and all-out experimental weirdness, and it helped put the Elephant 6 collective on the map. The follow-up BLACK FOLIAGE ups the ante by successfully merging those two elements. Thus, we have swirling, REVOLVER-ish songcraft seamlessly meshed with all manner of musical arcana and effects. BLACK FOLIAGE is notable ...
