| | Mariza Transparente CD (2005)
Favole Per Adulti CD music
$13.49 Transparente is Mariza's "big" album, it seems, the one designed to make her more than just the shining star of the new fado. The music connects the dots between Portugal and Brazil, giving an international quality to it all. Her voice is as crystal clear as ever, and production by Jacques Morelenbaum is wonderfully transparent. Yet there's a sheen to it all that seems intended to rub off any rough edges. You can hear it in the soft strings that cushion "Meu Fado Meu." It just seems to be trying too hard, rather than letting the music unfold. It's apparent, too, in the fact that the songs are all short -- the longest barely passes three-and-a-half minutes. Not that it's not a gorgeous album; it enfolds the ears like silk; Mariza herself has never sounded more seductive, and the cello on "Quando Me Sinto So" is as warm and inviting as a lover's kiss. But unlike her previous work, there seems an air of calculation about all this, the sense of deliberately seeking out a larger audience rather than allowing the music to speak for itself. She'll never sing a bad note, and there's absolutely nothing to fault with this album. The arrangements are understatedly lush, the playing impeccable, everything as close to ...
| | Jane Siberry When I Was A Boy CD (1993)
Favole Per Adulti music CDs
$8.39 Jane Siberry's last album during a five-year critically-applauded but commercially-negligible tenure with Reprise Records, 1993's WHEN I WAS A BOY trades the optimistic loveliness of albums like THE WALKING and BOUND BY THE BEAUTY for a darker, occasionally bleak meditation on love and loss. Inspired by the recent death of her father, Siberry has constructed a song cycle with little of the exhibitionistic mawkishness of, say, Sinead O'Connor's I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT.
Instead, Siberry's lyrics are more general and poetic, which makes their emotional heft that much greater. The heartbreaking "The Vigil (The Sea)" and the cathartic and uplifting "Love Is Everything"--here in two versions--are as powerful and musically breathtaking as any pop music dealing with the subject of death.
Recorded at Mushroom Studios, Vancouver, Canada in Summer 1991; Reaction Studios, Toronto, Canada in Autumn 1991 and January 1993; Erdyl's Studio Backstage, Switzerland in February 1991; Westside Studios, London, England in Summer 1992.

| | Augury Fragmentary Evidence CD (2009)
Favole Per Adulti music CDs
$13.79 Devoted death metal fans have long known Quebec as a bubbling cauldron of awesome progressive death metal bands. Starting with Voivod and Gorguts in the late '80s and early '90s, and really booming during the latter decade and the 2000s with Cryptopsy, Neuraxis, Unexpect, Martyr, Beneath the Massacre, et al., the region has produced a staggering number of bands of this type. Well, add Augury to that impressive roster. These guys (formerly guys and girl, though vocalist Arianne Fleury departed between 2004's Concealed and this release) make up one of the most astonishing prog-death bands on the planet, and Fragmentary Evidence is one of the best metal albums of 2009. The songs have an epic sweep, with brilliant instrumental performances from all, particularly the guitarist and bassist, the latter of whom is placed quite prominently in the mix, popping the strings (don't worry, we're talking Stanley Clarke, not the Red Hot Chili ...
