(33 Customer Reviews)
R&B/pop singer JoJo rose to prominence on the television show AMERICA'S MOST TALENTED KIDS, but quickly established herself as more than a child wonder with her 2004 debut. The artist's sophomore effort, HIGH ROAD, builds on the commercial pop of her first album, fusing hip-hop-tinged beats with swirling, soulful grooves, emotive balladry, and singing that's heavy on melisma. The lead-off single, "Too Little Too Late," powered by a big radio-ready chorus, is a case in point. Top-shelf productions from hot producers like Scott Storch, Swizz Beats, and Jermaine Dupri boost the album's already considerable pedigree.
Personnel: JoJo (vocals); Soulshock & Karlin, Ryan Leslie (various instruments, programming).
Entertainment Weekly (p.72) - "She's a vocal phenom, capable of Mariah Carey-style upper-register flourishes." -- Grade: B Q (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[She] has an appealingly distinctive voice....'The Way You Do' is a supercharged finger-clicker..." JoJo, you have out done yourself! I remember being really excited about her sophomore release. I received it for Christmas (would have gotten it sooner but there was a death in the family a day before her CD was released). I remember begging my dad to get it for me for Christmas. When I opened the box it was in (along with a Digital Camera), I screamed with joy! I rushed to the car and popped it in and when I heard her voice, I was completely blown away. I loved ALL the songs! My favorite being 1, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, and 12. I absolutely loved "Let It Rain", it was brilliant! But the vocals on "The High Road" (the song, #4) were incredible! I L-O-V-E-D this album! Even more than her first(that was fantastic too). Jojo has really out done herself and I am astounded by her success. I am her #1 fan and I am proud to say I am a her loyalest fan from day #1. I LOVE YOU JOJO! Submitted by tiffany_sd619 (San Diego, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
YES YES YES!!!!!! JOJO!!!! YES you FINALLY came up with better songs! Your first album was (I'm sorry) pretty bad, but this totally makes up! The songs are more catchy and your voice is so much stronger! ROCK ON, GIRL! Submitted by Vanessa (California) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Blown away I've been a fan of JoJo since her very first single and to be honest I was a little skeptical about this album, because of all the other work she's been doing, I thought the quality of her music would slip. But I was blown away when I listened to this album. She has increased her range so much, and really shows off her talent in this album and her versatility. Best songs are 3, 4, 9, 11, 12. Purchase High Road CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
High Road album
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time ...

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
High Road music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence and newfound liberation on tracks like the chest-thumping "So What" and the mischievous, bouncing "Bad Influence." In softer moments, ...

| | Joss Stone Colour Me Free! CD (2009) Import
High Road CD music
$30.38 The "free" in the title to Joss Stone's fourth album apparently refers to the neo-singer breaking free from the shackles of her major label, EMI, who apparently have not let Joss be Joss. That this constricting argument happens to be the exact same story line Stone used for 2007's Introducing Joss Stone, the splashy diva power trip meant to unveil the "real" singer, is conveniently forgotten, as is the modern R&B of that makeover, with Joss returning to all the retro-soul of her first two records. The one lingering element of Introducing is a propensity for melisma-laden oversinging, a tic that stands out in the warmer, funkier settings of Colour Me Free! Still, her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, and this does beat with a messy human heart. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Miles Davis Big Fun CDs (1974) Remastered
High Road songs
$15.95 In the period following Miles Davis' crossover breakthrough, BITCHES BREW, the trumpeter recorded incessantly, trying out new combinations of ideas and musicians. These progressive young musicians went on to forge a new alloy of music from the ore of funk, electric soul, psychedelic blues and progressive rock, with trace elements of classical and jazz. And Miles was the lightning rod for it all.
BIG FUN gathers up some of the trumpeter's choicest experiments in '70s cool, much of it with a profoundly Indian flavor, and Miles' attraction to raga phrasing mirrors his love of flamenco melodies, particularly on "Lonely Fire" (a late Miles ballad in the tradition of "Nefertiti," "Shhh/Peaceful" and "Sanctuary"). This moody arrangement is distinguished by floating tear drops of tamboura, sitar, tabla and Fender/Rhodes, as Miles sounds taps, shadowed by soprano sax and bass clarinet, before breaking into tempo over the crossrhythms of Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.
Miles employs twin keyboardists, twin bassists and twin drummers, throughout BIG FUN, and the visceral starts and stops of "Great Expectations" highlight the sort of layered, collective polyphony he was trying to develop, his focused melodies acting as a lyric beacon. ...
