$10.39 The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, one finds on listening to it 40+ years later that a little goes a long way. Rodgers devised a straightforward melodic ...
| | British Film Classics CDs (2003) (Import) England
Movie Album Soundtrack album
$16.65 It may sound overblown, or even downright silly, to say this about what is really a sampler album, but the two-CD British Film Classics is a wonder, in scope and quality, one of the finest soundtrack anthologies devoted to its subject. That's not too surprising, however, as it comes from Chandos Records, a label that has gone out of its way in recent years to record an extraordinary amount of classic material in the vintage soundtrack field. Opening up with Ron Goodwin's glorious, sweeping main title theme from Sidney Hayers' The Trap (1966), the disc takes us backward 30 years to the dawn of classically structured British soundtracks with Sir Arthur Bliss' march from William Cameron Menzies' Things to Come (1936), then ahead to the 1940s and Alan Rawsthorne's charming, elegant "Valse Caprice" from Uncle Silas (1947). Sir William Walton's "Prelude" from Hamlet is represented with far bolder, more emphatic playing than one is accustomed to hearing -- one of the virtues of the Chandos recordings of these scores is that the conductors and orchestras aren't afraid to play the music with a lot of fire and passion where it's called for, representing virtually all of the music in its most compelling form. This is ...
| | Best Of Broadway The American Musicals Best Of Broadway: The American Musical CD (2004)
Movie Album Soundtrack CD music
$11.95 By now, the merchandising program is always in place when PBS sponsors another documentary series, whether one of Ken Burns' historical efforts or the films grouped under the heading The Blues in 2003, organized by Martin Scorsese: among other keepsakes, there is the coffee-table companion book, the DVD set, and, for the musical programs, the CD box set. All of these were rolled out in connection with Broadway: The American Musical, a six-part documentary broadcast in October 2004. And this single-disc CD is the cheapest item in the bunch (unless, perhaps, there's also a coffee mug), much less expensive than the box set of five CDs. Although it is called The Best of Broadway: The American Musical, it is not exactly a reduction of that set. The compilers have taken the opportunity to make alternate choices of material (one song per show) in several instances. Here, the title song from Oklahoma! is picked instead ...
