John Barry's fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative of the full score. The real heart of Dances With Wolves is the pensive, tragic "John Dunbar Theme," which ...

Bruce Springsteen's "Dead Man Walkin'" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
Not quite a soundtrack, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE DEAD MAN WALKING is the result of director Tim Robbins sending a rough cut of the film to his favorite singer-songwriters and asking them to respond in song. Not all the songs were used in the movie, but on disc they form a separate and equally powerful meditation on the same basic subjects: sin, redemption and the thoughts that run through a man's head as he awaits execution. The performers may be the most awesome group of Dylan disciples ever collected in one place--Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Patti Smith, Tom Waits ...

Artie Lange's Beer League Soundtrack album
$12.49 It's pretty strange for a best-of to be compiled for a band that had just two albums and one hit record, and it's stranger still for no less than 11 of the 20 cuts on that best-of to be unreleased tracks. It seems more like an excuse to get hardcore collectors to fork over for the unreleased stuff than a proper presentation of Violinski's best recordings. And those hardcore collectors should be aware that every single one of those 11 unreleased tracks is an alternate version, not a song previously unavailable by Violinski in any form. Adding insult to injury, many of these rarities are designated as an "instrumental rough mix," "early version," "alternate early take," or "alternate early mix" -- hardly items to make one salivate in anticipation, let alone qualify for a best-of anthology. So it isn't the best compilation worthy of the subtitle "The Very Best of Violinski," though it does include their ...
