The style of The Arcane Order is somewhere between classic trash (mainly because of the riffs) and melodic death metal, but because of the many details, like gentle placed samples & keyboards, The Machinery Of Oblivion sounds very fresh. On top of that the singer Kasper Thomsen growls his lungs out from the start to the finish, but the music still stays catchy in a special way. French death metal outfit Gojira put a bit of a twist on the traditions of the genre. Extended song lengths give the musicians time to stretch out, and the band plays with complex rhythms, juxtapositions of loud and soft sections, and other hallmarks of progressive metal. None of this is to say FROM MARS TO SIRIUS isn't heavy, however, as the rhythm section crushes with the weight of an anvil and the riffs slice with a razory brutality. Rather than filling up space with hackneyed virtuoso shredding (the album has a conspicuous dearth of solos), Gojira funnel their expertise into intricate song structures and immediately affecting atmospheres.

Though the hard-driving duo Death From Above 1979 hails from Canada, that didn't stop them from being snapped up by cutting-edge NYC label Vice Records. In fact, the pair's sound has much in common with their post-punk-inspired New York contemporaries, but they differ from the pack in a major way. DFA (not to be confused with the NY electroclash label of the same initials) employs an instrumental palette consisting almost entirely of bass and drums. Jesse F. Keeler plays mind-bogglingly overdriven bass lines (and the occasional synth), providing the frenetic riffs over which Sebastien Grainger howls excitedly and bashes his drums with savage abandon. The resultant sound is a melting pot of Motorhead-like metal, stoner rock, and Pop Group/Wire-indebted post-punk, with a touch of the Boredoms' noise-is-God aesthetic thrown in for good measure. The unrelenting YOU'RE A WOMAN is a slap in the face to those who think early-2000s indie rock translates into an endless stream of Gang of Four copycats.

Nebular Mystic started in 1999 and soon did a demo called "Taakeriket" and started to do live shows.
