This Swedish multi-instrumental musician admits a debt to folk music in general and Chicago post-rock in particular. On his first U.S. full-length release, he conjures the shade of John Fahey, as well as elements of the Tortoise offshoot Pullman, ... Full Descriptionin a set of gorgeously realized, dappled acoustic instrumentals like the childlike "Windplay" and the simple, hypnotic 'Second Summer," the latter of which has the hazy, cozy charm of a late autumn afternoon.
Swedish travelling musician Rickard Jäverling is a man with heart, something never more evident than when gliding through Two Times Five Lullaby -- his debut album. After spending some time in Ireland and Glasgow playing folk music to earn a living, Jäverling decided to return to his native Sweden and start laying down the tracks he'd always dreamed of with his musical friends in Stockholm. Taking influence from his love of American folk music, Chicago post-rock, classic Swedish prog and the pastoral ambience of Eno and Budd, Jäverling began to piece together a record utilizing the musical talents of anyone he could find. We have banjos, accordion, drums, harps and even Hammond organ (played by Sagor and Swing's Erik Malmberg) dropped into the mix in what feels like a document of friendly inclusion. A coherent whole when listened to from beginning to end, Jäverling has created a record which reads like a book, each chapter detailing excitement, adventure, love and remorse. Whether moulding a classic hoedown ("Three Sisters"), a softly-spoken ballad ("Two Times Five Lullaby"), slow-burning prog ("Track") or a nostalgic waltz ("Martina's Waltz") it is Jäverling's honesty and pure uncynical talent that always shines through, and in this post-millennial climate that is more than you could ever ask for. | | Jean-Michel Jarre Oxygene CD (1976) (Import) France
Two Times Five Lullaby music CDs
$10.25 Released in 1976, OXYGENE proved to be a massive hit for French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre. The son of film composer Maurice Jarre, the synthesizer player sought to create warmer sonic textures through the technology of the time, and the result was this pioneering six-part album. OXYGENE's bizarrely creepy cover, featuring a skull underneath the peeled-away surface of the globe, belies the music's lush beauty, though it does point to haunting moments such as "Oxygene III." The record's most recognizable track is the majestic "Oxygene IV," which features percolating synth lines and spare, nearly imperceptible beats. While the album would lead Jarre to international fame, especially in his native France and the rest of Europe, it also proved to be a recording that he struggled to top, even going so far as to release a sequel, OXYGENE 7-13, more than 20 years later. For aficionados of late-'70s electronic acts such as Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, this bold outing is essential.
Recorded from August to November 1976.
Solo performer: Jean-Michel Jarre (sythesizer, Farfisa organ, Mellotron).

| | Best Of Tom Jones CD (1998)
Two Times Five Lullaby music CDs
$6.79 THE BEST OF TOM JONES is probably the most thorough and entertaining of the many Tom Jones compilations available. Twenty-two tracks are exquisitely remastered to let every one of those over-the-top string sections and all of Jones' manly bellows reverberate as nature intended.
All of Jones' biggest hits are included, from 1964's "What's New Pussycat," through such definitive Jones classics as "It's Not Unusual," "She's a Lady," and "Delilah," all the way up to his tongue-in-cheek comeback with the Art Of Noise, a 1989 electro-shock collaboration on Prince's "Kiss." Too long thought of as merely a kitsch figure, Jones is an undeniable talent. However, it seems that either you get him or you don't. If you get him, this is the anthology to get.

| | Lotus Escaping Sargasso Sea CDs (2007)
Two Times Five Lullaby songs
$13.45 This live double CD captures the ethereal funk of Philadelphia's highly eclectic jamtronica band, Lotus. Deep, rolling bass, sensual rhythms, celestial guitar harmonics, and synth come together to form a new kind of soulful world/jazz/techno that is highly danceable and listenable. It's hard to pick a stand-out track, but the slinky "When H Binds to O" best represents the meshing of all the instrumental band's influences.
Lotus: Luke Miller, Mike Rempel (guitar); Jesse Miller (bass guitar); Steve Clemens (drum); Chuck Morris (percussion).
| | Fats Domino & Friends CD (2007)
Two Times Five Lullaby album
$9.15 Featuring a sampling of recordings by the great New Orleans artist Fats Domino, his influences, and contemporaries, this selection gathers some of the best-known creations of 20th-century R&B greats such as Johnny Otis, Little Richard, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Though somewhat misleadingly titled (there are no star-studded duets here), the set is an entertaining overview of mid-20th century popular R&B, with contributions from Big Joe Turner on "Shake, Rattle and Roll," Johnny Otis's immortal "Willie and the Hand Jive," and Domino's signature hit, "Blueberry Hill."
Fats Domino: Fats Domino; Little Richard, Richard Berry, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Ray Charles.
