| | Barenaked Ladies Stunt CD Barenaked Ladies Discography of CDs
STUNT is another tightly wound, witty, melodic Barenaked Ladies album, with songs that range from dangerously manic to contemplative and nearly sweet. The slightly psychotic white boy rap on "One Week" employs wacky lyrical ingenuity, with such lines as "Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes/Big like LeAnn Rimes." On the other hand, the charm of "In The Car" lies in its twangy alt-country sound and a sense of nostalgia for a more nanve time. Barenaked Ladies' lyrics can veer awfully close to being precious, but they avoid crossing the line with a magical combination of intelligence, biting cynicism, and a refusal to take themselves too seriously.

Stunt
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.

$15.05 Only the most hardhearted of cynics could resist the melancholy sweetness of this album's beloved title track. The song was a hit in 1968 and only became the opening cut on this wonderful album some 20 years later. This well-known recording of the tender ballad--complete with a 16-piece string section--is lovely enough. But it is Pops' gravelly voice and inimitable signature delivery that really bring out its beautiful, aching quality.
Also included are such hits as "Cabaret," ...

| | Carl Weingarten Local Journeys CD (2005)
Stunt
$15.89 Composer, producer, and slide guitarist Carl Weingarten's 2005 release LOCAL JOURNEYS continues the musician's exploration of genre-blending moodscapes. Weingarten's music is highly atmospheric, with spare, trance-y sonic backdrops haunted by percussive pulses and wisps of ghostly slide. This is music that conjures images of deserted, dusty towns and clouds cutting across a blood-red moon, and it is difficult, as a result, to resist employing the adjective "cinematic" when trying to describe the effect this music has.
Yet Weingarten's evocative, image-rich sound-worlds are the best kind: they project their own inner films in the minds of attentive listeners. To its credit, LOCAL JOURNEYS is more of a piece than some of Weingarten's other releases. With the exception of some piano, synthesizer, and light percussion, almost all of the record is strings, including cello, dobro, bass, e-bow, and Weingarten's ubiquitous slide. Moreover, a spectral atmosphere prevails in the hazy textures ...

| | Ozzy Osbourne Black Rain CD (2007) Import
Stunt
$9.79 Lyrically Ozzy makes some familiar anti-war statements ("Black Rain" and "Countdown's Begun"), delivers social and political commentary ("Almighty Dollar" and "Civilize The Universe"), and offers affection for his fans and loved ones ("Here For You" and "Lay Your World On Me"). Clean and sober for over two years, the self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness is in remarkably strong and healthy form on BLACK RAIN.
Limited Edition UK pressing of Ozzy's 2007 album comes housed in bootleg-style cardboard packaging. Black Rain is Osbourne's first new studio material in six years. Ozzy co-produced the album with Kevin Churko and recorded it with his touring band: Zakk Wylde (guitar), Mike Bordin (drums) and Blasko (bass). Ozzy feels this album is the true follow-up to his classic No More Tears, the 1991 album that also challenged the expectations of what an Ozzy album should sound ...
