In some ways the love child of Sade and Norah Jones, European sensation Ayo blends African pop and western soul influences into seductively mellow mood music. The daughter of a Nigerian father and a Romanian Gypsy mother born and raised in Germany, Ayo (whose name does mean "Joyful" in Yoruba) has a smoky voice and soulful delivery perfectly matched by the low simmer of jazzy arrangements built on African percussion, acoustic guitar, and old-fashioned funky organ grooves. Highlights include the passionate first single, "Down on My Knees."
2006 issued debut from the German born lady whose father was Nigerian and her mother a Gipsy. Her life has been spent in Germany, Africa, France, England and The U.S., though she calls Germany her place of residence. Producer Jay Newland assembled a band that acceeded to Ayo's every wish, producing these songs with flourishes of pidgin and recollections of gipsy life....both tributes to her parents. She draws musical inspriation from Donny Hathaway, Jimmy Cliff and 60's pop. The album was completed live in the studio in an amazing 5 day span! The result is a collection of bittersweet songs dotted by her personal experiences as well as those by people she's encountered along the way.Entertainment Weekly (p.130) - "[A] set of reggae-infused, guitar-driven ballads....The German-born singer skillfully borrows sounds from around the globe." | | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Joyful
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy ...
| | Philipp Fankhauser Talk To Me CD (2004)
Joyful
$12.65 Talk To Me is the title of the latest album from Philipp Fankhauser, the highly regarded blues artist based in Thun, Switzerland, and his first for Memphis International Records. Fankhauser is well known to European audiences but he is also familiar to North Americans as a result of his role as guest vocalist with the band of the late blues great Johnny "Clyde" Copeland. While the bulk of Talk To Me is comprised of l Fankhauser originals it does include two Johnny Copeland compositions and Shemekia Copeland, Johnny's daughter and a renowned star in her own right, penned the liner notes. "Philipp will always be very special to the Copeland family; his music is special for just about everyone," she wrote. The album includes a version of "Members Only," a song that was an R&B hit for Bobby Bland in the 1980s and produced for ...

| | Coachwhips Get Yer Body Next Ta Mine CD (2003)
Joyful
$9.05 Coachwhips' Get Yer Body Next Ta Mine is a perfect example of an album that gets its inspiration from different eras. Singer/guitarist John Dwyer's blues-based riffs have been heavily influenced by '60s garage rock; he's obviously well aware of the Kinks. But his distorted vocals and the band's overall recklessness owe more to the punk and alternative rock of the '80s and '90s. Put all of those things together, and you have a very raw, basic, and primal CD -- one that is the total opposite of polished and thrives on punk's stripped-down aesthetic. Actually, Dwyer's vocals are a little too distorted and are placed too far down in the mix; much of the time, it's difficult to make out the lyrics that he is singing. But in terms of ambiance -- not to mention sheer infectiousness -- Get Yer Body Next Ta Mine is a success. Coachwhips provides ...
