(7 Customer Reviews)
In some ways the love child of Sade and Norah Jones, European sensation Ayo blends African pop and western soul influences into seductively mellow mood music. The daughter of a Nigerian father and a Romanian Gypsy mother born and raised in Germany, ... Full DescriptionAyo (whose name does mean "Joyful" in Yoruba) has a smoky voice and soulful delivery perfectly matched by the low simmer of jazzy arrangements built on African percussion, acoustic guitar, and old-fashioned funky organ grooves. Highlights include the passionate first single, "Down on My Knees."
2006 issued debut from the German born lady whose father was Nigerian and her mother a Gipsy. Her life has been spent in Germany, Africa, France, England and The U.S., though she calls Germany her place of residence. Producer Jay Newland assembled a band that acceeded to Ayo's every wish, producing these songs with flourishes of pidgin and recollections of gipsy life....both tributes to her parents. She draws musical inspriation from Donny Hathaway, Jimmy Cliff and 60's pop. The album was completed live in the studio in an amazing 5 day span! The result is a collection of bittersweet songs dotted by her personal experiences as well as those by people she's encountered along the way.Entertainment Weekly (p.130) - "[A] set of reggae-infused, guitar-driven ballads....The German-born singer skillfully borrows sounds from around the globe." | | John Legend Once Again CD (2006)
Joyful CD music
$10.49 If John Legend hadn't made his name working with Kanye West, producing Jay-Z, and playing on Lauryn Hill's classic THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL, his 2004 studio debut GET LIFTED would have still established him as a true frontrunner in the world of R&B. His studio follow-up, 2006's ONCE AGAIN, is better than its predecessor; the music is still steeped in vintage 1960s- and '70s-flavored R&B, but Legend's songcraft, productions, and nuanced singing are even more appealing.
Most impressively (especially for someone who ...
| | Feist Reminder CD (2007)
Joyful music CDs
$10.39 Canadian singer-songwriter Leslie Feist first gained prominence working with the Montreal shock-rapper Peaches and later the Toronto-based collective Broken Social Scene, but with the release of 2004's masterful LET IT DIE, she embarked on a solo career that quickly eclipsed her previous work. Following the pleasant but inessential remix album OPEN SEASON, 2007's THE REMINDER is Feist's true follow-up to LET IT DIE, and it deepens and solidifies that album's strengths. Combining jazzy torch ...
| | Herbie Hancock River: The Joni Letters CD (2007)
Joyful songs
$9.95 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many of Mitchell's finest songs, stunning ...
| | Alicia Keys As I Am CD (2007)
Joyful album
$12.79 The third full-length from contemporary R&B diva Alicia Keys is called AS I AM, a title that adequately reflects the album's straightforward, confessional soul-pop. Keys built her popularity making stylish, reflective, voice-&-piano music; AS I AM continues that trend, albeit in a poppier vein that balances neatly between neo-soul and adult contemporary. This is reflected in the mid-tempo grooves, songs of empowerment ("Superwoman"), and stirring ballads ("The Thing About Love").
Keys's collaborators on the album include songwriter Linda Perry, who co-wrote three of the album's tracks, and John Mayer, who twines voices with Keys on the sensual "Lesson Learned." Top-notch arrangements, which include gorgeous, retro-tinged flourishes via strings and horns, make the set shimmer, but it's the strength of the hook-heavy tunes and Keys's moving performances that make AS I AM stick. It's not the five-star album she's capable of, but it leaves little doubt that Keys is moving steadily in that direction.
Personnel: Alicia Keys (vocals, piano, ...
| | Mary J Blige Growing Pains CD (2007)
Joyful CD music
$10.05 It's no accident that Mary J. Blige is an icon on the urban contemporary scene, in large part because each new album--and 2007's GROWING PAINS is her eighth--finds her more self-assured as a singer, a lyricist, and a person. Like 2005's THE BREAKTHROUGH, GROWING PAINS delivers a mature Mary J., one who's faced down her demons and emerged triumphant. The tough-as-nails, confessional nature of her work is still what gives it its distinctive stamp, but Blige's sonic ...

| | Bob Dylan Bootleg Series V.1 - 3 CDs (1991) Import; Remastered; Boxed Set
Joyful songs
$84.99 THE BOOTLEG SERIES, VOLUMES 1-3 consists mostly of previously unreleased studio outtakes. It also include demos and alternate versions of released material, and a handful of live tracks.
Recorded between 1961 and 1989. Includes a 68-page booklet with song-by-song notes by John Bauldie.
Dylan proved to be not only one of the most bootlegged of 20th Century performers, but also one of the first (GREAT WHITE WONDER was one of the releases that turned bootlegging from a pastime into an industry). Over the years, Dylan's legions of fans rabidly traded recordings of live shows, out-takes, demos and other rare material. THE BOOTLEG SERIES attempts to supply the definitive collection of what had been bootlegged material. Its three discs move along chronologically, spanning the length of Dylan's career and providing candid, previously verboten glimpses into his creative process, and consequently, his musical genius.
The first disc features some intriguing ...
