Hailing from Veracruz, in southern Mexico, Grupo Mono Blaco has been playing the traditional jarocho music of that region since 1978, as well as being involved in the revitalization of traditional culture, including dances and instrument making. This sunny selection is typical of the band's output, which is strongly reminiscent of Peruvian music with an additional percussive beat.
Recording information: El Cerrito, CA (1990); Mabarak Studios, Veracruz, Ver., Mexico (1990).
Editor: Eugene Rodriguez.
Grupo Mono Blanco: Andres Vega Delfin (vocals, guitar); Andres Alfonso Vergara (vocals, harp); Gilberto Gutierrez Silva (vocals, pandeiro, percussion); Patricio Hidalgo Belli (vocals).

What's quickly evident is that the instrumentals are more enjoyable, perhaps because his lyrics tend toward the glib, with personal revelation and depth of emotion held back to a minimum, although whether that does him any favors as a songsmith is debatable. But there's nothing fatuous about the Middle Eastern-flavored "Ya Amar," where his mandola and mandolin playing are a delight (although the flute seems to take it close to Jethro Tull terrirory), or the traditional "Krivo Sadovsko Horo," which offers more of the range ...
