A few weeks prior to his death on May 10, 2006, pianist John Hicks entered the recording studio for what was likely the final time to produce this memorable CD. His reflective ballad "One Peaceful Moment" is a meditative solo piano feature that opens the disc. Two additional solo features, "The Things We Did Last Summer" and the original "Sunset Blues," continue the mood set by the opening track. Tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson's heartfelt tenor sax is the perfect pairing with the leader in "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry." Hicks' wife (and frequent recording partner), Elise Wood, is added on flute in several Latin selections, including Woody Shaw's lively "Sweet Love of Mine" and the pianist's breezy "Peanut Butter Two," which also feature percussionist Ray Mantilla. This excellent date is a fitting conclusion to John Hicks' career. ~ Ken Dryden

Down Beat (p.68) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[It's] hard to imagine a better way to remember Hicks than his distinctive, clever-but-underplayed phrasing on this CD's highlight, 'Mambo Influenciado.'" Bob Mover Sweet Love Of Mine Songs | 1. | One Peaceful Moment |

| Sweet Love Of Mine Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) A Grand Finale John Hicks, one of the most prolific pianists, composers and arrangers of the modern jazz era has left his continued legacy of excellence and skillful musicianship in the form of his final recording with HighNote Records.
In this final musical delight, Mr. Hicks brings about a myriad of emotions to subliminally arrive at the title of the CD, "Sweet Love of Mine". The title song, by the late trumpeter, Woody Shaw, speaks to the passion of Hicks and his dedication to the jazz genre. The late Duke Ellington is quoted as saying "Music is my Mistress", well, Hicks' passion and love of music is evident in this recording and is appropriately titled.
A gifted composer in his own right, we are witnesses to a revamping of his original composition, "Peanut Butter in the Dessert", which is now ttled, Peanut Butter II. The teaming with master percussionist, Ray Mantilla, helps to bring a vibrant Latin-tinged repertoire to this occasion and yet, swings in true jazz tradition with the soulfulness of Javon Jackson on tenor saxophone, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Victor Jones on drums.
Overall, I have enjoyed this CD immensely yet, I am saddened to listen to it knowing John Hicks will no longer bring us any newer recordings. But, it is safe to say that his legacy of wonderful and brilliantly composed music will be with us forever. Sweet Love of Mine is a grand finale and brilliant piece for all to enjoy. The solo piano tracks are worth the entire CD. Breathtaking!!! Submitted by Teachumwell (Atlanta, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sweet Love Of Mine album
$16.49 On their sixth album, Sister Machine Gun continues to do a superb job of incorporating a variety of musical styles into their post-industrial electro-rock; the hip-hop vocals of "Loser," the funky "Down On Me," the Pink Floyd-esque "Release," and the acoustic folk and bluesy harmonica of "Ten Minute God" are all good examples. Unfortunately, most of these experiments have been tried before by other bands, and have already become ...

| | Brian Lynch Fuchsia/Red CD (2003)
Sweet Love Of Mine songs
$13.25 Trumpeter Brian Lynch is famous for playing high-quality hard bop, formerly with the last version of Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers in addition to the Phil Woods Quintet and his own combo dates. FUCHSIA/RED is definitely a change of pace because the music mostly falls into the area of fusion. With Brad Turner dominating the ensembles on electric keyboards, Lynch sounds surprisingly comfortable in this setting, performing his originals plus a song by Björk. Some of the music is reminiscent of Freddie Hubbard's better funk projects, while other selections are closer to prime fusion of the late '60s/early '70s, a bit like Miles Davis' groups. "Magenta's Waltz" is a little more mainstream but otherwise this is a date that is more highly recommended to fans of fusion than to Lynch's usual audience.
Few performers in the world of jazz music have such a rich and varied career palette as trumpeter Brian Lynch. Born September 12, 1956 in Urbana, Illinois, Brian grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had his initial playing experiences there with such local luminaries as pianist Buddy Montgomery and organist Melvin Rhyne, while earning a degree from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Briefly moving to San Diego in 1980-81, he gained further valuable experience in the group of master altoist Charles McPherson.Brian moved to New York in late 1981 and rapidly made inroads on the New York music scene and the international music world. One of his first major gigs was with the Horace Silver Quintet (1982-1985), as well as garnering big band experience with the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra (1982-1988). At the same time, Brian was playing and recording on the Latin music scene with such renowned salsa artists as Angel Canales and the great cantante Hector La Voe (1983-87). Brian, after many record dates as a sidemen, recorded his first album as a leader, Peer Pressure on the Criss Cross label in 1986.The late '80s found Brian making important and enduring associations with two giants of music. In 1987, he began playing in the groups of legendary Latin master Eddie ...
