A Grand Finale
John Hicks, one of the most prolific pianists, composers and arrangers of the modern jazz era has left his continued legacy of excellence and skillful musicianship in the form of his final recording with HighNote Records.
In this final musical delight, Mr. Hicks brings about a myriad of emotions to subliminally arrive at the title of the CD, "Sweet Love of Mine". The title song, by the late trumpeter, Woody Shaw, speaks to the passion of Hicks and his dedication to the jazz genre. The late Duke Ellington is quoted as saying "Music is my Mistress", well, Hicks' passion and love of music is evident in this recording and is appropriately titled.
A gifted composer in his own right, we are witnesses to a revamping of his original composition, "Peanut Butter in the Dessert", which is now ttled, Peanut Butter II. The teaming with master percussionist, Ray Mantilla, helps to bring a vibrant Latin-tinged repertoire to this occasion and yet, swings in true jazz tradition with the soulfulness of Javon Jackson on tenor saxophone, Curtis Lundy on bass, and Victor Jones on drums.
Overall, I have enjoyed this CD immensely yet, I am saddened to listen to it knowing John Hicks will no longer bring us any newer recordings. But, it is safe to say that his legacy of wonderful and brilliantly composed music will be with us forever. Sweet Love of Mine is a grand finale and brilliant piece for all to enjoy. The solo piano tracks are worth the entire CD. Breathtaking!!!
